Introduction

This programme is designed for first level Registered Nurses wishing to gain a qualification in Children's Nursing. Successful completion of the Children's Nursing programme leads to registration on the appropriate part of the professional register for the United Kingdom.

The Children's Nursing programme is based on an ethos of life-long learning. The programme focuses on preparing individuals to become competent, flexible and accountable practitioners able to deliver evidence based care, to challenge opinions, to evaluate their own work and to cope with the demands of the dynamic nature of Children's Nursing.

Structure

Content

The conversion programme builds on existing nursing skills and concentrates on developing knowledge and the range of skills (cognitive and behavioural) necessary to become a competent Children's Nurse. The programmes run on a modular basis. Theoretical modules provide the basic building blocks of knowledge and skills which are enhanced and integrated in the professional practice modules.

Teaching and learning

Teaching and learning methods include lectures, seminars, student led seminars, group work, critical incident analysis and case studies. Support for studying is provided by academic staff and practitioners on placement. Work-based learning days support the integration of theory and practice and facilitate the assessment and portfolio development process. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning and there is a strong emphasis on self-directed study.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary and include project work, poster presentations, essays and presentations.

Special Features

Placements

Practice is divided into two placements. They will be negotiated on the basis of the student's profile and learning needs and will be determined by the criteria for registration as prescribed by the professional bodies.

Students on the Children's Nursing programme will gain experience in both acute, non acute and home care settings, address the age range of the child and the high and low care dependency needs of the child. You will also be introduced to the seven day week and 24 hour care of the child and the family. Flexibility of working hours is therefore necessary but negotiable to allow for planning and access to the learning opportunities offered by the placement.

Applicants are responsible for securing their own placements for this course. For further information please contact the Programme Leader.
