Introduction

The Department of Nursing and Midwifery offers these 18 month programmes for existing second level nurses to convert to a first level nurse in a different branch of nursing practice.

Successful completion of the programme leads to registration on the appropriate part of the Professional Register for the United Kingdom.

Structure

Content

The programme focuses on preparing individuals to become competent, flexible and accountable practitioners based on an ethos of lifelong learning. The ability to deliver evidence-based care, to challenge opinions, evaluate their own work and to cope with the demands of the dynamic nature of nursing is fundamental to this preparation.

This programme requires the practitioner to work collaboratively with individuals, clients, patients, children and families, other health and social care professionals and agencies. Nurses need to be self-reliant, resourceful, and able to take responsibility for their own learning and development, all of which are the essential components of a competent practitioner.

The conversion programme builds on existing nursing care skills, and concentrates on developing knowledge and the range of skills necessary to become a competent Children's Nurse.

The programmes are run on a modular basis. Theoretical modules provide the basic building blocks of knowledge and skills, which are enhanced and integrated in professional practice modules. The number of credits undertaken and at what level will depend on which pathway you choose and your current student profile.

Teaching and learning

Teaching and learning methods include lectures, seminars, student led seminars, group work, critical incident analysis and case studies. Support for studying is provided by academic staff and practitioners on placement. Work-based learning days support the integration of theory and practice and facilitate the assessment and portfolio development process. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning and there is a strong emphasis on self-directed study.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary and include project work, poster presentations, essays and presentations.
