Therapeutic radiographers play an important role for cancer patients as they are appropriately trained to plan and deliver radiotherapy treatment while ensuring each patient receives care and support and is treated as an individual. This programme has been developed to accelerate graduates into the radiotherapy workforce with the essential technical, communication and caring skills that are required in the NHS or private radiotherapy departments.
We are recognised nationally and internationally as one of the leading education and training centres for Radiotherapy and Oncology, and are proud to have produced the Society and College of Radiographers national student of the year in 2013 (BSc Radiotherapy and Oncology). A recent Radiotherapy MSc graduate also obtained the UWE Santander Master's Bursary for research or work experience. He used the money to gain experience at the Peter Mac RT department in SABR and HEARTSPARE (treatment techniques) in Australia.
Our teaching staff are known for their exceptional knowledge, clinical experience and student support, while our national student survey rank proves our continually high standards when it comes to learning experience and employability.
Our academic team's research-based approach to teaching led to them being chosen to host the inaugural VERT International Users Conference in 2010.

All modules are compulsory.
In your first year you'll study a range of modules that allow you to build on your existing graduate skills. You will learn the fundamentals of radiotherapy and oncology linking with the relevant anatomy and associated physiology. You will also be introduced to applied physics relating to the radiation and technology in order to receive the underpinning knowledge required for the first clinical placement.

- Research methods in Radiotherapy (15 credits)
- Radiotherapy and Oncology theory and Practice (30 credits including Practice Placement 2)
- Dissertation (45 credits)
In your second year, you'll build on the knowledge and skills you learned in Year 1 to explore more complex aspects of Radiotherapy and Oncology practice.

Learning and Teaching
Based on our health-focused Glenside campus, this course begins in January and involves classroom-based modules and clinical placements where you gain your clinical competence and undertake research. It's an excellent mix of study and professional experience. The focus is on using your graduate skills to be an independent learner and manage your workload effectively.

We use a range of assessment methods throughout the programme, including written assignments, exams, presentations, interactive online assessment, objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) and continuous practice assessment in a clinical environment.
The course is assessed according to the University Academic Regulations and Procedures, and we expect full attendance at all times. You must take your professional practice placements in order, and you'll need to pass each placement before being allowed to start the next. There is always at least one external examiner.

This course is accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and on successful completion, you can apply to register with them for the protected title of Therapeutic Radiographer.
This course is also accredited by the Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR).
We have excellent industry links in the South West, with placements possible in nine different NHS hospitals from Cheltenham to Truro. You'll take part in three 14-week placements over the two years, where you'll learn on the job while carrying out primary research towards your final dissertation.
Placement travel and accommodation
Students who have applied for a NHS bursary may be eligible to claim reimbursement for travel costs to and from placement.
Accommodation can be provided for all placement areas. Students outside the Avon, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire areas may be eligible to claim reimbursement for accommodation costs. Individual advice is available on request from the programme leader.
On your placement you'll work alongside highly skilled Therapeutic Radiographers as well as the wider professional team, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills in all aspects of Radiotherapy treatment and patient care using the latest research and technology.
Our Department on Glenside Campus is superbly equipped with an extensive range of teaching and learning resources, and as all staff and students at the campus are involved in health-related courses, you'll be surrounded by likeminded people great for peer and professional support.
You will also have access to the VERT suite (Virtual Environment Radiotherapy Training), our life-size 3D virtual radiotherapy treatment room complete with patient and linear accelerator. This cutting-edge training platform will help you develop invaluable operational skills away from the pressure of the clinical environment (see VERT film). We also have a new computer planning suite where you can learn how to make computer generated plans for radiotherapy treatments.
The library on the Glenside Campus is one of the best health care libraries in England, with a huge selection of books, journals, and audio-visual material, including specialist health and social care software packages. You'll also have access to computers at our main Frenchay Campus 24 hours a day.

Careers / Further study
Students graduating from this course are highly employable, and there are lots of career opportunities and areas for role extension in therapeutic radiography, including planning and dosimetry. Once qualified you will be eligible to register with the Health and Care Professionals Council.

Supplementary fee information
We have a limited number of places available for international students.
Students will have their fees paid by the NHS for the ordinary duration of their course.
Applicants accepted for an NHS funded place are eligible to apply for an NHS income assessed bursary. For further information, please see the NHS bursary website.
NB: Even if you do not think you will be eligible for an income-assessed NHS bursary we recommend that you still apply for one. This will entitle you to apply for placement travel expenses at a later date. You cannot apply retrospectively for an income-assessed NHS bursary.
EU nationals may be eligible for part of an income-assessed NHS bursary. Students may have their tuition fees paid but will not qualify for a maintenance (cost of living) allowance or the additional allowances.
If you do not fall into either of the above categories you may be liable for the full cost of the tuition and placement fees in addition to your cost of living expenses.
- Graduate (2:1 or above) in a scientific/health related subject
- Grade C or above in English Language, Mathematics and Science, or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs
Consideration will also be given to individual's background/life experiences, for example from the previous first degree or relevant work experience opportunities in relation to their knowledge and understanding of the profession of radiotherapy.
We are able to accept a limited number of international students (overseas fee status applies) for this course. If English is not your first language, you will be required to meet the UK Border Agency and Universities minimum English Language requirements, such as:
- minimum IELTS score of 7 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in any section, (or equivalent).
International students who do not meet the academic or English language requirements to study this course can qualify by completing preparatory study at our UWE Bristol's International College.
Entry will be via the UWEBIC Pre-Master's pathway.
Accreditation of prior (experiential) learning will be evaluated on an individual basis in accordance with university regulations. Where a student has studied and gained credit in a similar subject then Accreditation of Learning (AL) may be applied for, Accreditation of Experiential Learning relates to learning achieved through experience gained outside formalised learning arrangements and may also be applied for. An example where AL may be appropriate could be a graduate in Diagnostic Imaging who has undertaken postgraduate study.

Additional selection criteria
As well as meeting the academic entry requirements, applicants should meet the following selection criteria:
All applicants are strongly recommended to visit a radiotherapy department prior to enrolling on the programme and should reflect on this experience within their application.
Health Assessment/Declaration - applicants must be in good health. Those offered a place are required to complete a questionnaire and be prepared to undergo a medical examination if necessary. UWE will initiate this process by contacting prospective students directly.
Disclosure of Criminal Background - the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 does not apply and all convictions, including those which are spent, must be disclosed. Applicants who are offered a place must undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and will be required to complete a Disclosure Application Form. All information will be treated in confidence and only taken into account when absolutely necessary. UWE will initiate this process by contacting prospective students directly.
Interview - shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview with a member of staff from the academic team and a member of staff from clinical service.
Interview questions will explore key areas required to study radiotherapy and oncology such as evidence of team working, communication skills, knowledge and understanding of the profession. Commitment to the course will also be explored.
