Why study BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science?

Studying Biomedical Science will provide you with the scientific knowledge underpinning an understanding of the biology of disease, along with the application of this knowedge to diagnose disease and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments.

You will develop skills at the forefront of advances in medical science and build the analytical, problem-solving and communication abilities needed for rewarding careers in areas, such as medical research, consultancy, education and management.

The BSc(Hons) Biomedical Science at UWE Bristol offers a hands-on approach to learning. Beginning with a strong foundation in modern biomedicine, including basic scientific core subjects, the study of specialist biomedical science subjects is integrated through a study of the biology of disease. This provides a broad knowledge base, as well as the flexibility to develop expertise in the areas that interest you most. Working at the cutting-edge of biomedical science and using state-of-the-art equipment, our focus on the application of science in the real-world will prepare you for a variety of exciting careers.

Real-world experience

With the opportunity to gain essential practical experience in work-based situations, the course will offer you the chance to undertake placements and internships. If you choose the sandwich option, the whole of year three will be spent on placement with a major employer in the pharmaceutical, healthcare or research sector in the UK, Europe or further afield.

Our graduates find employment in an increasingly diverse range of roles. Many follow careers in biomedical science, working in research and development for organisations in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. Some choose to work in sales, the media or education, while others opt to study for postgraduate qualifications.

Foundation Year (Year zero)

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Biology in Practice
  • Chemistry in Practice
  • Skills for Science
  • People and Science

You will undertake the Foundation Year alongside students from our other Biological, Biomedical and Analytical Sciences courses, and therefore may be able to transfer to a course in one of these areas at the end of the Foundation year.

The normal expectation is that you must pass all Year zero modules before progressing to Year one.

Year one

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Genetics
  • Pathophysiology of Disease
  • Anatomy and Physiology

Year two

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Physiological and Immunological Systems
  • Practice and Communication of Science

Learning and Teaching

The Department of Applied Sciences is evolving a culture of student-centred learning, supported by learning packages and a web-based Virtual Learning Environment. Guided independent learning is encouraged and a framework is provided through lectures, seminars and tutorials. Practical classes are extremely important in supporting learning, with both laboratory and computer-based sessions. In the final year, you will carry out an independent research project to seek new biomedical knowledge. Your research project will be undertaken with a tutor supervisor and may be carried out alongside his/her research team.

Your tutors are all engaged in research and other scholarly activity, working across the range of disciplines encompassed by biomedical sciences. They will support your learning and encourage you to develop as a biomedical scientist.

The range of assessment methods includes both traditional approaches, such as essays and reports, as well as group tasks and presentations. You will work closely with other students in your group and will be supported by both student advisers and a tutor. Overall, assessment is through both coursework and examinations.

Professional accreditation

This course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).


Throughout the course, you will be able to apply your expertise and build professional skills in work-based settings with placements, internships and volunteering roles. The sandwich course option involves 40 weeks of work-based training in a specialised area of biomedical science or in a broader role.

You will have the chance to work with major employers in the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry, such as GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis; ICI; government laboratories, including CAMR and Porton Down; and various university research centres.

Some students choose to spend their year overseas in destinations, such as the USA, Malaysia, Germany or Switzerland.

Study facilities

You will have access to a comprehensive range of well-equipped, modern science laboratories that feature specialist apparatus for histology, haematology and biochemistry and cell culture suites to support immunology, virology and microbiology, along with a large range of instruments to measure human performance physiology. In the Final year, you will have access to research equipment for your projects, with extensive facilities for light-based microscopy (including confocal and fluorescent) and an electron microscopy suite.

Our students graduate with the knowledge, skills and practical experience to make a valuable contribution to the health of the community. The majority of our graduates follow careers in biomedical sciences, particularly research and development work in the healthcare, pharmaceutical and education sectors.

As well as preparing you for potential research and laboratory-based work in the public and private sectors, the course will equip you with the transferable skills demanded by employers recruiting for a wide variety of roles, from medical sales and scientific writing to quality control and health and safety. Some graduates have used their qualification to successfully support applications for mature entry to medicine degrees, while many choose to continue their studies with MPhil/PhD research degrees or Master's courses.

  • GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C/4 or above in English Language, Mathematics and Double Science, or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
  • A-level subjects: Science AS or A2. Points from A-Level General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) can be included towards overall tariff. You must have a minimum of one A-Level.
