Taught in partnership with Hartpury College (UWE) this unique course integrates good knowledge of business management with specialist subject knowledge within animal management.

Structure

Content

In recent years there has been considerable growth in the animal industry and an increasing need for well qualified employees to work in this sector. This degree level course aims to provide the personal, academic and technical skills necessary for such a career. It is a vocationally focused programme that will enable you to engage in work-based learning throughout your course.

Modules include:

Year 1

  • Animal Behaviour
  • Animal Genetics
  • Animal Nutrition
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Animal Practice (includes work experience)
  • Business Studies
  • Introduction to Veterinary Science
  • Introduction to Animal Biology (subject to previous qualifications)

Year 2

  • Animal Management (to include 220 hours of work experience)
  • Business Principles
  • Ethics and Welfare
  • Field Ecology
  • Statistics and Research Methods

During Years 1 and 2 you will partake in a Graduate Development Programme which will allow you to develop your academic skills to help ensure you are successful during your course and at this level of study.

Placements

Full-time students have the option to engage in a one-year period of work experience between the first and second level of their course.

Careers/further study

On successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to continue your studies for a further year to complete an Honours Degree at Hartpury College in Animal Management or progress to specialist areas such as animal behaviour, nutrition or veterinary nursing. Alternatively, this course will prepare you for a variety of careers in the animal industry including employment by animal welfare and wildlife organisations, zoological work, and supervisory posts in animal retail organisations or animal product sales.

  • GCSE: Maths and English Language at grade C or above required.
  • A-level subjects: A levels or vocational A levels in a related subject, preferably a Biological Science.
  • EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: BTEC National Diploma/Certificate/Award in a related area; Advanced Diploma in a related area
  • Access: Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma; achievement of level 2 credits in Maths and English Language.
