Introduction

The sandwich Foundation degree in Equine Performance has been designed to meet the specific needs of the Equine Performance Industry. The programme will enable you to develop practical skills alongside sound academic knowledge, supporting you at the highest level within the industry. Graduates will have appropriate skills and experience to enter top level competition yards, equine therapy and rehabilitation centres and equine veterinary practices.

This unique Foundation degree incorporates the very best facilities, resources, academics and industry based experts within the delivery. You will complete a number of standard modules including Equitation, Anatomy and Physiology, Equine Exercise Physiology and Applied Equine Nutrition. Alongside these, professional practice modules including Equestrian Practice and Management of the Performance Horse will enable you to develop key industry standard skills alongside transferable skills. You are also encouraged to take a sandwich placement between Levels 1 and 2. The development and content of this Foundation degree has been met very positively by academics, employers and students alike

All the Foundation degrees include work-based learning (worth 40 credits) during the programme of study. This usually takes the form of an 8-week placement between levels 1 and 2.

Fieldwork

Students have been involved in a number of exciting opportunities; these have includedsupporting national competitions, photo shoots with Horse and Hound, BEF training days, Cheltenham Races and Badminton Horse Trials. Students have also gained important experience and contacts from participation.

Careers/further study

Employment opportunities include working within top level competition yards as performance grooms and working as specialist grooms within therapy and rehabilitation centres and equine veterinary practices. Students may also progress onto the BA(Hons) Equine Management (top-up) or the BSc(Hons) Equine Science degrees.
