Introduction

This is part of a set of study options within the postgraduate Engineering Capability Development Framework (ECDF). The concept behind the Framework is to offer you flexibility in the modules you study, and the opportunity to move freely between award routes based on your career goals.

The MSc/PGDip/PGCert Engineering Management course is aimed at engineers who want to move into management while maintaining their competences in technical subjects. It can also help you develop a portfolio of evidence to support Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration, even if you don't have the academic qualifications normally required to study engineering management at Master's level.

Building on your experience alongside your peers

You'll normally have substantial experience in engineering, perhaps as an engineering undergraduate or as an apprentice with a Higher National Certificate (HNC), who has progressed to working at graduate level or equivalent.

The course has an 'advised route', but there is a wide range of optional modules available, and built-in flexibility to choose the topics most relevant to your career aspirations. Just talk to the Programme Leader about the modules that best match your goals. There is also flexibility in the learning format, with taught three to five-day blocks of lectures and workshops on campus, distance- learning, or work-based project options.

Students are either full time students completing the award in one year, or industrially based students that come from a range of different companies within the sector, including primes and throughout the supply chain. This mix of students from different backgrounds, companies and with different roles adds a unique perspective of peer learning, as you network and learn from each other.

However you approach the course, we're here to help support your long-term professional career development, including helping you develop a 'portfolio of evidence' to support your application to become a Chartered Engineer.

Peer learning and support

Many of the modules will bring together students from a range of Master's engineering and management courses. This widens the scope of the learning and provides a strong learning experience, mixing technical and business skills with management capabilities.

Structure

Content

The full Master's course comprises 180 credits divided into three 60 credits stages: Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and Masters. Students work incrementally through the three stages and must pass all modules at each stage in order to progress to the next.

Full-time students will study the following modules:

Principles of Lean Engineering

Engineering Project Management.

Dissertation

For students studying on a flexible basis, whilst there is inherent flexibility to your studies, the course has four core modules:

Research Investigation and Methods for Change

Strategic Analysis of Technical Operations.

You then choose from the optional module list, with help from your Programme Leader, and according to your qualification route. If you're planning to take the MSc study programme and use it to provide the academic part of your portfolio of evidence for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration, you should check with the relevant professional institution that your module selection meets their requirements.

To achieve the MSc, you'll require eight 15-credit modules, including the core modules, and complete the 60-credit dissertation.

The course is endorsed by the Engineering Council and full time students will have preselected their modules to ensure they gain the appropriate knowledge for this body.

Dissertation

This will be a significant industry-focused piece of work that integrates your learning from the taught material and develops your abilities for in-depth study of a substantial technical or management problem within an engineering sector.

You will have academic sponsors, or if you are a part-time student normally industrial sponsors for this, to help you scope out the project in the required context.

This project activity is attractive to employers, as it provides an opportunity to deal with a real issue in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Often, your project will have a significant effect on the business sponsoring it.

The University continually enhances our offer by responding to feedback from our students and other stakeholders, ensuring the curriculum is kept up to date and our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need for the real world. This may result in changes to the course. Learning and Teaching

The learning methods and the structure of the course mean you'll take an integrated view of an engineering enterprise by placing technology in strategic, financial, human and operational contexts. We encourage you to read about the subjects independently, to consolidate your knowledge and understanding and broaden your understanding of the key concepts.

Taught modules are usually held over three to five consecutive days, but can include distance learning and work-based learning in some cases. You'll organise your work-based learning with your module leader, this ensures it's tailored to your needs and the learning outcomes are achievable.

Study time

Each 15-credit module is expected to take around 150 hours to complete. The overall course can be completed as full-time in one year, but is more normally studied part-time, taking between two and five years, as students are normally also in full employment.

Assessment

Assessment is normally by assignment. At this level, we do not need to test your understanding, but rather your ability to implement your newfound skills and knowledge. Assignments will normally be around a real industrial case study, or a live project in your workplace.

Study facilities

Our dedicated engineering facilities include a flight simulator, subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels, a motorsport workshop, specialist laboratories and industry-standard simulation suites.

However, if you're in full-time employment we expect you'll do a lot of your study in your work environment.

We operate an extensive pastoral care system that provides guidance and support throughout your studies, including induction programmes and access to academic staff and student advisers.

If you're an international student, our ACES course offers you a range of support activities in academic writing, communication and English language skills. Affiliation

This course has been developed from a well-established Master's course, in conjunction with other awards within the ECDF. It incorporates aspects of the MSc Professional Engineering, approved by the Engineering Council and HE-STEM for students with non-standard academic backgrounds.

We've identified compulsory module requirements to emphasise the management aspects of engineering. They are designed to support your professional career development and allow you to develop a portfolio of evidence towards Chartered Engineer registration, if required.

We require one of the following:

  • A professionally accredited UK honours degree of 2:2 in an Engineering discipline, and three years relevant industrial experience (please tell us about your experience in the 'personal statement' section of your application).
  • A first degree from an overseas institution that can be shown to be equivalent to a UK Honours degree of 2:1 or above in an Engineering discipline.
  • A first degree from an overseas institution that can be shown to be equivalent to a UK Honours degree of 2:2 in an Engineering discipline, and three years relevant industrial experience (please tell us about your experience in the 'personal statement' section of your application).
  • Appropriate academic or professional qualifications equivalent to the above which you should describe in detail in your application.
