Introduction

Why BEng(Hons) Civil and Environmental Engineering?

Civil Engineers are creative problem solvers who tackle some of the world's biggest challenges. From the world's tallest buildings to resilient water supplies in developing countries, civil engineers work on the design, construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, buildings, flood defences and infrastructure. This puts them in a prime position to shape the world around us, and protect and enhance our environment through the sustainable use of resources.

Why study our course?

Studying Civil and Environmental engineering at UWE Bristol will educate you on the broad spectrum of civil and environmental engineering, ranging from structures to materials soil mechanics and hydraulics to risk management. This is taught through classroom sessions, laboratory practicals and field trips. Alongside this, you will develop vital professional skills in management, creative skills in design and practical skills in surveying, geographical information systems (GIS) and computer-aided design (CAD).

The department research themes in transport, flooding, bridges and sustainability enhances our teaching on the course. The degree is accredited. This means that, along with the relevant work experience, it will form your first step on the path to becoming an Incorporated Engineer. Alternatively, by completing a programme of accredited further learning, you will be able to work towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.

Real world experience

You will apply what you've learnt through a series of projects based on real world scenarios. Our partner employers will provide placement opportunities, as well as advice on CV-writing, interview techniques and industry issues. You will also gain an inside track on the profession through site visits and professional briefings with industry leading organisations across the UK.

Where it can take you

Careers will be varied, with opportunities in the UK and overseas in areas such as structural design, water, power, road or railway infrastructure engineering, business planning and cost forecasting.

Structure

Content

The course covers a broad spectrum of civil and environmental engineering. This includes structures, materials and hydraulics, as well as hydrology and project management. These subjects are developed throughout the course and you will have the opportunity to specialise in your final year. Projects will be used throughout the year to help develop your design skills and integrate subject knowledge.

Year one

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Mathematics and Engineering Principles
  • Surveying, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Drawing and Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
  • Environmental Engineering Field Study
  • Engineering and Environmental Materials
  • Engineering Hydrology
  • Civil Engineering Technology and Design.

Year two

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Structural Design and Soil Mechanics
  • Project Management, Health and Safety Risk Management
  • Application of Mathematics for Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Hydraulics and Engineering Applications.

In addition, you will study one of the following optional modules:

  • Understanding Coastal Dynamics
  • Engineering Geology
  • Traffic Engineering Design.

Optional Placement Year

Final Year

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Final Year Project
  • Structural Analysis and Geotechnics
  • Design Project
  • Advanced Structural Modelling.

You will also select optional modules from the list below, according to credit requirements:

  • Environmental Assessment
  • Coastal Management
  • Optional Placement
  • Traffic Safety and Management
  • Advanced Geographical Expedition
  • Strategic Issues in Engineering.

Please note this structure is for the full-time course delivery only. For part-time delivery, the same modules will be studied. However, the structure will differ.

Learning and Teaching

The structure of the course provides a balance between theory, practice and design. Project modules are designed to allow you to develop skills and apply knowledge through problem-based and work-based learning.

Study time

You can study this course three years full-time, four years sandwich or five years part-time by day release, leading to the award of a BEng(Hons) Civil and Environmental Engineering.

If you are a part-time student, you will study the same core modules as full-time students, but these will be spread over five years and you will study on a day release basis. This is a popular route as it allows the opportunity to earn while you learn and provides a practical context at all stages of the course. To reflect this, work based learning routes are available for some modules.

Assessment

Assessment will take place through a balance of coursework and examinations. Examinations are held in either January or May/June. Coursework will include a variety of essays, reports, presentations, teamwork exercises and progress tests.

You are encouraged to complete 'formative work' to prepare for assessments. This does not count towards your marks but the feedback you receive will help you to improve your performance. Support is availableif you have difficulties with numeracy, IT, literacy and study skills.

  2. partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng), with a programme of accredited Further Learning required to complete the educational base for CEng.

Placements

Students who complete a work placement are more likely to graduate with a better degree and obtain higher quality work on graduation. So as well as helping hone your professional skills, industry knowledge and network, a placement will make you highly employable on graduation.

Placements are available with our partner employers, as well as organisations across the region. Past students have worked for water companies and local authorities, as well as regional and international consultancies. Many of these employers have been so impressed with the calibre of our placement students that they have employed them on graduation.

Fieldwork

Throughout the course, you will undertake fieldwork and go on site visits for a number of modules. Destinations include Dartmoor in the first year, Wessex Water sites in the second year and an opportunity to travel overseas in the final year.

Study facilities

We are based in a large modern building with new studios, teaching rooms and well-equipped physical geography laboratories for concrete and environmental science, hydraulics, environmental physics, earth sciences and surveying technology. here, you will;

  • map and measure angles, distances and topography, as well as carry out level surveys, in our surveying lab
  • map locations and design structures, using industry-standard CAD and GIS software in our computer labs, which are also equipped to help you model and test hydrological and surface water drainage
  • create and test structures in our concrete and physics labs
  • understand and develop theory in our hydraulics labs.

Careers / Further study

Careers are varied, with opportunities in the UK and overseas in areas such as structural design, water, power, road or railway infrastructure engineering, business planning and cost forecasting. With the relevant work experience you could become an Incorporated Engineer. Alternatively, you could complete a programme of accredited further learning work towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.

Many graduates continue studying on MSc courses, either full-time or part-time alongside their Initial Professional Development. Several recent graduates have successfully secured research studentships to complete an Engineering Doctorate or PhD.

Typical offers

  • Tariff points: 112
  • GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C or above, or Grade 4 under newly reformed GCSE grading, in English Language or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
  • A-level subjects: Grade C or above in Mathematics. Points from General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) can be included towards the overall tariff. You must have a minimum of two A-Levels.
  • Specific subjects: Maths requirement can also be met by the Cambridge Pre-U Mathematics at Merit 3.
  • EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: To include Merit in one of the following units: Further Maths for Technicians; Further Maths for Construction and the Built Environment.
    Please list the units that you are taking in your application.
  • Access: Achievement of the HE Diploma; to include 15 Level 3 credits at Merit in Mathematics (before you apply, ask us which Maths units you need to do). Please list the units that you are taking in your application.
  • Baccalaureate IB: To include a minimum grade of 5 in higher level Mathematics.

Advanced entry: If you have HND or FdSc qualifications in closely related subjects, you may be able to join the course in the second year. If you have an HNC or other cognate qualifications, you may be credited with individual modules, which will shorten the course for you.
