Why study BEng(Hons) Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical engineers play an important role in many of the products in the world around us. This involvement can range from design, manufacture and development, through to the management or marketing of products. With a degree in Mechanical Engineering, you will have the opportunity to use your skills in the sector you wish.
Why study our course?
Accredited by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), this UWE Bristol course shares elements with the first year of the aerospace and automotive engineering degrees. This means that, after developing a strong grounding in the fundamentals of engineering in your first year, there will be an option to transfer onto one of these courses. As you progress, you will increase your understanding of stress analysis, dynamics, heat transfer, mechatronics, materials and manufacture, together with learning industry standard software before you specialise in your final year. Throughout the course, you will gain plenty of hands-on experience in testing theories in our well-equipped laboratories.
Real world experience
To make sure that you're industry ready when you graduate, the course is developed alongside our partner employers. These will provide you with placement opportunities, as well as advice on CV-writing, interview techniques and industry issues. You will also gain an inside track of the profession through scheduled factory visits and professional briefings with industry leading organisations across the UK.
Where it can take you
In addition to traditional engineering jobs, mechanical engineers are sought after for the product development process and are highly regarded in the world of financial business. They are also in demand to help maximise usage of high capital plants and operations such as power stations, oil refineries and hospitals.
Depending on your second year results, you may have the opportunity to transfer to the four-year MEng Mechanical Engineering course.
Watch: The learning and teaching experience
The first year will provide you with a basic grounding in the fundamentals of engineering, including mathematics, design, manufacturing, electronics and mechanics. All the modules are 'core', meaning they are compulsory and have much common with our aerospace and automotive engineering degrees. It is possible to transfer between degrees on successful completion of the first year.
The second year looks at analytical subjects, including maths, in more depth and covers such areas as stress analysis, dynamics and heat transfer, using a wide range of specialist laboratories.
In the final year (BEng), you will find a significant amount of choice within the course, allowing you to specialise, perhaps with your chosen career in mind.

- Project Management.
You will study the following compulsory modules:
- Computational Methods
- Individual Project BEng.
In addition, you will study three of the following optional modules:
- Composite Engineering or Mechanics of Materials
- Thermofluid Systems or Energy Technologies
- Materials and Structures for Special Applications
- Integrated Electro-Mechanical Systems
- Vibrational Dynamics
- Control Engineering.
Finally, you will also choose one of the following:
- Business Environment
- Industrial Placement.
You will have the opportunity to exit after Year three with BEng or, depending on your second year results, complete Year four and gain an MEng Mechanical Engineering.
Please also note this structure is for the full-time course delivery only. For part-time delivery, the same modules will be studied. However, the structure will differ.

Learning and Teaching
As well as a concentrated programme of lectures and tutorials, you will undertake experimental laboratory work, engineering fabrication, drawing and design, computing and application based mini-projects. You will use a wide range of experimental facilities, including stress analysis, testing and materials selection, dynamics and vibration, thermofluids, energy conservation and control, aerodynamics (high speed and low speed wind tunnels), electronics and computing, manufacture, advanced manufacture and robotics.

This course is available to study on a part-time day release basis. Modules are structured to allow you to attend lectures and tutorial sessions one day per week, therefore minimising the time spent away from the work place.
Dependent on entry qualifications, you will generally be able to complete the course within five years. A large proportion of our part-time students are supported by their employer.
A key benefit of studying part-time means you will be able to put your learning directly into practice and, where possible, use work-related problems in projects.
All material is normally assessed through either assignments or examinations. In the final year, individual and group project reports and their presentation form part of the assessment.

This degree is accredited by The Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
If you complete an IMechE accredited degree you will be deemed to have met part or all of the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer, putting you in a strong position to move on to achieve professional engineering status after a period of initial professional development in industry.
This BEng(Hons) will meet, in part, the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). It will also automatically meet the academic requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
Students who complete a work placement are more likely to graduate with a better degree and obtain higher quality work on graduation. So, as well as helping hone your professional skills, industry knowledge and network, a placement will make you highly employable on graduation.
Placements are available with our partner employers, as well as organisations across the region. Past students have worked for the German Space Agency, Rolls Royce, Airbus and smaller regional consultancies. Many of these employers have been so impressed with the calibre of our placement students that they have employed them on graduation.
Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to see engineering in action at a range of facilities. On these factory visits, you will receive a guided tour of the shop floor and a presentation from the host organisations. Past visits have included Jaguar Land Rover, the National Composite Centre, Airbus and GKN.
This course will give you the opportunity to test your theories and develop engineering skills in our well-equipped laboratories, where you will:
- carry out stress analysis experimentation in our statics lab or consider movement-based problems in our dynamics lab
- experiment with industry ready electro-mechanical machines
- investigate heat transfer and engine performance, using specialist equipment
- develop practical skills in our rapid prototyping facility and machine shop
- learn how to complete Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computer Aided Design (CAD) on our workstations, which are equipped with industry standard software.

Consulting and contracting jobs are available in the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of equipment and machinery. These are in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, pharmaceutical, energy and water. Supplementary fee information
The additional costs listed are those you could reasonably expect to incur during your studies and are for items not covered by the standard tuition fee. These could be materials, text books, travel, clothing, software or printing.
The honours degree is 360 credits in total. If you are a part-time student, you will generally study between 60 (15 credits x 4) and 90 (15 credits x 6) each year and will pay annually for credits taken in that year. As a part-time UK or EU student, you may be entitled to a fees loan from the Government.

- GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C or above, or Grade 4 under newly reformed GCSE grading, in English Language or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
- A-level subjects: Grade C or above in Mathematics plus a pass in one of the following subjects: Biology; Chemistry; Computing/Computer Science; Design and Technology; Electronics; Engineering; ICT; Further Maths; Music Technology; Physics; Statistics. Points from A-Level General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) can be included towards overall tariff. You must have a minimum of two A-Levels.
- Specific subjects: The maths requirement can also be met by the Cambridge Pre-U Mathematics at Merit 3.
- EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: GCSE Maths Grade B or above, or Grade 5 under newly reformed GCSE grading. One of the following BTEC Diplomas: Aeronautical Engineering; Applied Science; Construction and the Built Environment; Electrical / Electronic Engineering; Engineering; Land-based Technology; Manufacturing Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; or Operations and Maintenance Engineering. Must include Merit in one of the following units: Further Maths for Technicians; Further Maths for Construction and the Built Environment. Please list the units that you are taking in your application.
- Access: Achievement of the HE Diploma; to include 15 Level 3 credits at Merit in Mathematics (before you apply, ask us which maths units you need to do) and 15 Level 3 credits at Merit in another science or technology subject. Please list the units that you are taking in your application.
- Baccalaureate IB: To include a minimum grade of 5 in higher level Mathematics and a pass at higher level in one of the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Design Technology, Physics, Environmental Systems and Societies
