Introduction

Why MEng Aerospace Engineering?

Increasing activity in civilian space flight, unmanned aerial vehicles, and the civil aviation sector has led to rising demand for qualified aerospace engineers.

Why study our course?

Aerospace Engineering at UWE Bristol has been designed alongside regional aerospace partners and is accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society. This means you will be equipped with industry knowledge, as well as an in-depth understanding of the aeronautical design and build process.

Alongside the fundamentals of aerospace engineering, you will study materials and manufacturing processes, stress and dynamics, aerospace design, thermodynamics and fluids.Throughout the course, you will obtain practical experience in developing and testing your prototypes in our well-equipped laboratories.

Real world experience

To reinforce your Aerospace Engineering degree, you will have the opportunity to gain a real insight into the aviation industry through flight training. During this training, you will focus on areas such as navigation, aviation safety, aircraft instrument systems and regulations at a practical level (additional costs apply).

Where it can take you

On graduation, you will be set for a career in the aerospace industry. Job opportunities range from working on the design and manufacture of civil and military aircraft, to working with helicopters and jet engines.

Content

Year one

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Stress and Dynamics
  • Design, Materials and Manufacturing
  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Energy and Thermodynamics
  • Pilot Studies and Aeronautics*.

*You must pass this module in order to continue on the MEng Aerospace Engineering with Pilot Studies award.

Year two

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Fundamental Aerodynamics
  • Flight
  • Engineering Mathematics 2
  • Project Management
  • Aero-Structures.

Plus one of the following three pathways:

Design

  • Design, Materials and CAD/CAM
  • Stress Analysis.

Manufacturing

  • Design, Materials and CAD/CAM
  • Mechatronics.

Systems

  • Aircraft Systems, Avionics and Control
  • Mechatronics.

Optional placement year

Students wishing to undertake a placement year will complete the module Industrial Placement, which forms part of the credit for the following year.

Year three

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Aero-Propulsion
  • MEng Individual Project Part A.

Plus one of the following modules:

  • Business Environment
  • Industrial Placement (for those who complete a placement year)
  • Engineering and Society.

You will also continue with the specialist pathway selected in Year two:

Design

  • Systems Engineering
  • Structural Design and Inspection.

Plus one of the following modules:

  • Applied Aerodynamics
  • Spaceflight.

Manufacturing

  • Structural Design and Inspection
  • Managing Advanced Manufacturing

Plus one of the following modules:

You can exit after Year three with BEng(Hons) Aerospace Engineering with Pilot Studies or alternatively continue to Year four to complete an MEng.

Final year (MEng)

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • MEng Group project
  • MEng Individual Project Part B.

You will also continue with your chosen specialist pathway:

Please note this structure is for the full-time course delivery only. For part-time delivery, the same modules will be studied. However, the structure will differ.

Features

Placements

Students who do a work placement are more likely to graduate with a better degree and get higher quality work on graduation. So as well as helping hone your professional skills, industry knowledge and network, a placement will make you highly employable on graduation.

We work in partnership with employers including Airbus, Rolls Royce, GE Aviation and Agusta Westland and have strong relationships with smaller companies across the UK. These provide work placements and graduate employment opportunities. There are also other companies who provide placements for our students. Past students have worked with Airbus, Smith Industries, E-Stress, GE Aircraft and Marshal Aerospace.

Fieldwork

Throughout the course, you will see aerospace engineering in action at a range of facilities. This includes visits to organisations ranging from Airbus, GKN and the National Composites Centre, to museums such as the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovil.

On your first year trip to Cotswold Airport, you can look around aircraft and go into the flight control tower. In your second year, you will design and build a model glider aircraft's wings for Wings Week. Then you will get to 'race' it against the competition.

Study facilities

Apply what you've learnt and develop vital professional skills in our state-of-the-art facilities.

  • Design and draw new concepts using CAD, simulation and planning software on our extensive PC network.
  • Test aerodynamics in our subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels.
  • Develop and test materials using our composite manufacturing facilities, and stress and materials laboratories.
  • Test designs using our state-of-the-art flight simulator, which you can update with model data to test the flight mechanics and aerodynamics of design concepts.

Pilot studies programme

To reinforce your aerospace engineering degree you will have the opportunity to get a real insight into the aviation industry through flight training. During this training you will focus on areas such as navigation, aviation safety, aircraft instrument systems and regulations at a practical level.  UWE has excellent links with flight schools in the UK (Bristol Aero and Kemble Flying Clubs, Cotswold Airport) and the USA (NMC Aviation, Michigan).  If you meet the flight training requirements (e.g. medical and security checks) you will be eligible to graduate with an Aerospace Engineering (pilot studies) degree. Careers / Further study

The course will prepare you for employment in leading aerospace companies such as Airbus UK, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and Agusta Westland. Previous graduates have gone into careers in the design and manufacture of civil and military aircraft, helicopters and jet engines.

Typical offers

  • Tariff points: 128
  • GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C or above, or Grade 4 under newly reformed GCSE grading, in English Language, or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
  • A-level subjects: Grade B or above in Mathematics plus a pass in one of the following subjects: Biology; Chemistry; Computing/Computer Science; Design and Technology; Electronics; Engineering; ICT; Further Maths; Music Technology; Physics; Statistics. Points from A-Level General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) can be included towards overall tariff. You must have a minimum of two A-Levels.
  • Specific subjects: Maths requirement can also be met by the Cambridge Pre-U Mathematics at Merit 3
  • EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: GCSE Maths Grade B or above, or Grade 5 under newly reformed GCSE grading. One of the following BTEC Diplomas: Aeronautical Engineering; Applied Science; Construction and the Built Environment; Electrical / Electronic Engineering; Engineering; Land-based Technology; Manufacturing Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; or Operations and Maintenance Engineering. Must include Merit in one of the following units: Further Maths for Technicians; Further Maths for Construction and the Built Environment. Please list the units that you are taking in your application.
  • Access: Achievement of the HE Diploma; to include 15 Level 3 credits at Merit in Mathematics (before you apply, ask us which Maths units you need to do) and 15 Level 3 credits at Merit in another science or technology subject. Please list the units that you are taking in your application.
  • Baccalaureate IB: To include a minimum grade of 6 in higher level Mathematics and a pass at higher level in one of the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Design Technology, Physics, Environmental Systems and Societies
