Introduction

Why study property development and planning?

As more people move to towns and cities, the built environment becomes increasingly important.

Managing, planning and implementing the development and regeneration of cities is high on corporate and government agendas in the UK and abroad.

There is demand for skilled professionals who understand urban policy and can promote and manage property development.

Why UWE Bristol? 

BA(Hons) Property Development and Planning will give you a solid understanding of the concepts and requirements of urban planning and sustainable development.

Study the legal system and economic forces and their impact on creating healthy, sustainable communities. Learn about property valuation, landlord and tenant law and building construction.

Learn computer-assisted design (CAD), drawing, modelling and mapping. Assess urban design on day trips and residential field trips. Collaborate with students across related disciplines in an approach reflecting industry.

Content

The optional modules listed are those that are most likely to be available, but they may be subject to change.

Year zero (foundation year)

You will study:

  • Environment and Sustainability
  • Foundation Project in Sustainability
  • Society, Economy and Governance
  • Development and Place
  • Data Analysis and Design.

You normally need to pass your foundation year before going into year one.

Year one

You will study:

  • The Context of Property and Development
  • Commercial Property Appraisal
  • An Introduction to Building Construction
  • Healthy Sustainable Communities.

Year two

You will study:

  • Professional Practice for the Built Environment
  • Development Appraisal and Planning
  • Property Development Practice and Law
  • Future Places
  • Real Estate Economics
  • Investment Valuation and Appraisal.

Placement year (if applicable)

If you study on the five year (sandwich) course, you'll spend a year away from the University on a work or study placement after year two.

Depending on which you choose, you'll either complete a placement learning or learning and development module.

Learning and Teaching

Our lecturers are all engaged in professional practice or research. Along with an emphasis on hands-on learning, this gives the course professional practice focus that will prepare you for your career in planning.

Work on a variety of conceptual and pragmatic projects, culminating with a year-long special study project in your final year.

Explore techniques including computer-aided design (CAD), drawing, modelling and mapping.

Collaborate with undergraduates from other disciplines within the department. This encourages mutual respect and understanding of professionals you may work alongside in practice. It also develops your presentation, negotiation, communication and delegation skills.

Thanks to our Real Estate Partner Employers consortium, major employers get involved throughout your degree.

Assessment

You should expect a mix of coursework and exams,which assess what you know and can do and help you develop the confidence and skills that employers' value.

Exams are held in either January or May/June.

Coursework is made up of essays, reports, surveys, design projects, teamwork and progress tests.

We encourage you to do formative work (eg practice tests) to prepare for assessments. This doesn't count towards your marks but the feedback will help you improve your performance.

Support is available for students who have difficulties with numeracy, IT, literacy and study skills.

Features

Professional accreditation

This course is accredited by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

If you choose the three-year degree or sandwich course, you'll meet the RICS' educational requirements to become an accredited member. You need two years of professional experience in order to become a full member; your placement usually counts as one year.

Placements

Students who do a placement are more likely to graduate with a better degree and get higher quality work on graduation. So as well as helping hone your professional skills, industry knowledge and network, a work placement will make you highly employable on graduation.

Many of our students do a work placement and there are opportunities with our employer partners as well as further afield. Past students have worked in public and private sector organisations ranging from local authorities to Savills, Colliers and Legat Owen. We also encourage you to do internships to boost your skills and experience.

Fieldwork

We arrange day trips so you can visit study locations and meet people who can inform your work.

There are also field trips, subsidised by the department.

Year one

Day trips and site inspections to test your knowledge in the field.

Year two

An opportunity to take part in the International Property Week with three European universities.

Final year

A week-long field trip. Recent destinations include Budapest, Dublin and London.

Study facilities

Learn in a modern, well-equipped department facilities, including award-winning design studios.

Study and collaborate on group assignments in our dedicated Project Room.

Develop desktop publishing, computer-aided design (CAD), model-making, design and drawing skills in collaborative workshops.

Get support for photography, digital imaging, filming and sound recording from our audio-visual group.

Supplementary fee information

Your overall entitlement to funding is based on how long the course is that you're registered on. Standard funding is allocated based on the standard number of years that your course lasts, plus one additional year.

You'll apply for funding each year that you study and Student Finance will take into account how long the course is in each year that you apply. So if you register for the five year course and then transfer to the four year course, the number of years you can apply for funding will change. Student Finance will reassess your funding based on how many years you have been in study, not just those years for which you received student finance.

  • GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C/4 or above in English Language and Grade D/4 or above in Mathematics, or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
  • A-level subjects: No specific subjects required. You can include points from A-Level General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) towards overall tariff. You must have at least one A-Level.
  • EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: No specific subjects required.
  • Access: Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma; no specific subjects required.
  • Baccalaureate IB: No specific subjects required.

Entry requirements

The typical offers information is for full-time students starting in the foundation year.

If you don't meet the entrance requirements but have substantial relevant work experience, you should still apply. Especially if you feel your motivation and skills would enable you to succeed on this course.

You should also apply if you have a mix of A levels and BTEC qualifications.
