Introduction
This course is designed to deliver a structured and professionally -accredited programme of study, which primarily provides graduates of a non-associated degree with the core technical knowledge and skills leading to Chartered membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) as a property surveyor.
This degree aims to impart practical and theoretical understanding of real estate valuation, appraisal, development and management which will allow you to examine critically current practice and apply, at an advanced level, contemporary theory and techniques to issues that face property professionals.
On completion you will be able to consider and apply business management issues in the context of real estate investment, occupation and development decision-making, allowing you to pursue and develop your career in real estate management.

Structure
Content
The programme comprises 180 credits, 120 of which are taught along with a further 60 credits for the dissertation. The taught modules cover the following key subject areas:

Dissertation
The dissertation aims to foster a critical attitude towards the design and use of research in practice - orientated settings. We encourage our students to develop research proposals which reflect the needs of employers.
Teaching and learning
Teaching methods are varied depending on the module; in all cases lectures, project work and tutorials play a part.
Teaching staff are actively engaged in research or professional practice, ensuring that students learn directly from the latest academic and business developments.
Study time
Full-time students should expect to spend a minimum of 28 hours per week studying.
Part-time students should expect to spend a minimum of 14 hours per week. Employed part-time students will also spend a further 5 hours per week in the workplace on APC related activities.
The taught portion of the programme is delivered over two semesters; the first starts in September and ends in December with an assessment period in January, the second runs from January to April with an assessment period in May. Students may begin their studies in either semester.
The dissertation can be submitted in November or the following April.
Assessment
Assessment is achieved through a variety of course work assignments - essays, reports, surveys and presentations.
Students are also encouraged to do 'formative work' to prepare for assessment; this does not count towards final marks but the feedback received helps improve performance.
For the dissertation students complete a 15 to 17,000 word research project
Special Features
Professional accreditation
This course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). This means that once the taught modules have been completed, you can begin work and, after two years of qualifying practice and completion of the dissertation, can take the Assessment of Professional Competence. If successful you will become fully qualified Chartered Surveyor.
Study facilities
The Department has invested in online and offline computer-based resources to support modules, and especially those offered by distance learning. You also have access to a vast number of journals and databases online through the UWE Bristol library.
The library and some computer labs on campus are open 24 hours, and the Department's suite of computer rooms supports software for word processing, data analysis, spatial analysis, computer aided design and other specialist software required by our students.
Research
The department has an extensive programme of research and consultancy combining academic excellence and policy relevance, for which it has a well established national and international reputation. We have a strong track record of securing project funding from bodies which include the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the European Union. We also work with a wide range of clients in the private, public and voluntary sectors
Careers/further study
Our graduates go on to work in property and construction, in both the public and private sectors, employed by organisations like Jones Lang LaSalle, Taylor Woodrow, GVA, Persimmon Homes, CBRE, Savills, the Planning Inspectorate, Defense Estates, and various local authorities and housing associations.This programme is supported by our consortium of partner employers who help us to develop our curriculum and contribute towards the resources we use in teaching. Entry
Entry requirements
This course is suitable for students with a Bachelor's degree in any subject with the British equivalent degree grade of 2.2 or better.
We welcome applicants from students without the conventional entrance requirements but who have substantial relevant work or other experience and whose motivation and skills would enable them to succeed on the course.
We also welcome applications from people with disabilities, and we are happy to arrange visits for disabled applicants to find out whether the course is suitable, and discuss what support is appropriate.
