About this course
Introduction
This flexible part-time course is designed for qualified social work practitioners working with complex cases in adult care, who are seeking to achieve a Post-Qualifying award at postgraduate level.
This programme leads to the Post-Qualifying Award in Higher Specialist Social Work with Adults. It has been approved by the General Social Care Council, within the context of the Post-Qualifying Framework for Social Work Education and Training. See also the MSc Social Work with Adults (Advanced).
Structure
Content
You will develop a personalised route through the programme tailor made to your specialist area of practice with an allocated tutor. Individual programmes will comprise compulsory and optional modules.
You may be able to utilize some existing academic credit, through the University's accredited learning arrangements.
If you achieve 60 credits in specific modules you will be able to claim an interim award of Postgraduate Certificate in Social Work Studies. However the certificate does not lead to a qualification recognised by the GSCC.
Teaching and learning
The programme is highly flexible and includes opportunities for work based learning and independent study. There is a strong focus on learning and practice and many opportunities for interprofessional interaction. Most modules include seminar discussions, group work and self directed learning.
Assessment
Includes work based projects, controlled conditions assessments and a range of written assignments.
Careers/further study
The Higher Specialist award is recognised as an important stepping stone to career advancement for social work practitioners.
Entry
Entry requirements
An honours degree (minimum 2:2) from a UK institution, or a degree of comparable standard from an instituion outside the UK with a professional social work qualification. You need to be currently working with adult service users in a role which enables you to demonstrate a high level of practice competence.
You will also need the minimum entry level requirements for English Language.
