About this course

Introduction

This foundation degree is studied on a full-time basis. It is vocationally focused, integrating academic and work-based learning to reflect current and predicted needs within the sector. Unlike many traditional degree programmes, this Foundation Degree has stronger employer links and focus on work based learning.

This course is one of the few available that is specific to the uniformed services. Developed in consultation with the uniformed services this course focuses on the knowledge and skills needed to gain entry into, or enhance your existing position within the uniformed service industries. The course is primarily focused around police and army officer entry and development. In addition to the taught modules, you undertake two work based projects. This allows you to apply your new skills and knowledge directly to your own work place, and helps you develop skills that will enhance your employability.

Content

This course will appeal to you if you are interested in the uniformed services, or you would like to develop a better understanding of these exciting roles. The course aims to provide you with a sound understanding of the key aspects of uniformed service skills, fitness, expedition and personnel management and, outdoor pursuits.

In addition to your qualifications, it takes into account previous experience and evidence of your skills and knowledge. You will study a range of topics including: 

Year 1

  • Fitness and lifestyle management
  • Acquisition of skills in outdoor activities
  • Uniformed service organisation, culture and society
  • Uniformed service experience, work based learning 1

Year 2

  • Incident and emergency management
  • Stress management in the uniformed services
  • Planning and organisation of outdoor and adventurous activities
  • Uniformed service experience, work-based learning 2

Assessment

You will be assessed through a variety of methods including:

  • Coursework
  • Essays
  • Work-related projects
  • Module tests

Special Features

Careers/further study

On successful completion of this course you may have the opportunity to continue for a further year to complete an honours degree. If you wish to progress to the honours degree, you will require Maths and English at GCSE grade C or above; it is possible to study these alongside the FdA.

Alternatively, this course will prepare you for a variety of careers in the public and uniformed services including officer training in the armed forces and emergency services.
