Why FdA Business with Management?

In the face of increased competition in an ever-changing global economy, businesses are finding new ways to be innovative and grow profitably. In line with this, graduates no longer just require knowledge of business theory but also crucial skills and valuable real-world insight to remain competitive and progress in their careers.  

A foundation degree offers a unique opportunity to gain a university-level qualification whilst developing your business knowledge and skills.

Why study our course?

This flexible and contemporary foundation degree, delivered by University Centre Weston and awarded by UWE Bristol, has been developed in response to the needs of local employers to meet the current and future skills needs of business. It enables you to combine study with work and apply your learning directly back to your workplace.

This course takes two years full-time or three years part-time and will give you a general foundation in business and management theories and concepts covering areas such as managing people, marketing, finance, law and organisational behaviour whilst specialising in the field of management.

Real world experience

You will study a variety of business disciplines, developing transferable skills and benefiting from practical work-based learning. The course can include a period of working and studying abroad which will help develop an international business perspective. There will also be opportunities to develop solutions to real workplace problems during your studies.

Where it can take you

The course will prepare you for a diverse range of jobs in the business environment whilst having the added benefit of providing valuable and practical work experience.You will have the opportunity to go on to continue your study at UWE and gain either a BA(Hons) Business Studies or BA(Hons) Management degree.

Structure

Content

In your first year, you will study modules which are common across a number of Business and Management courses. This offers you the flexibility to switch between courses at the end of the first year as your interests develop and change.

Year one

The first year provides a foundation for the development of the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary for future success.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Introduction to Management
  • Understanding Business and Financial Information (BIM)
  • HRM and Leadership in Context
  • Understanding Organisations and People (BIM)
  • Understanding the Principles of Marketing (BIM)
  • Contemporary Business Issues
  • Business Decision Making for Management
  • Enterprise and Entrepreneurship.

Year two

In the second year, you will study modules relating to the main functional areas of business, alongside specialist HRM modules, and you will develop your research and enquiry skills.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Managing People
  • Management Skills (Business and Management)
  • Accounting Information for Business (BIM)
  • Contemporary Employment Relations
  • Research Methods for Business
  • The Experience and Practice of Organisations
  • Equality Law and Diversity Management
  • Research in HRM and Leadership.

All students are encouraged to spend their third year on placement and the curriculum in the second year provides support in securing this placement.

Final year

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Work-based Enquiry Project or Critical Business Enquiry Project or Applied Business Project or Business Project
  • Leadership and Organisational Development
  • Strategy and Human Resource Management
  • Managing Organisational Performance
  • International HRM.

In addition, you will study one of the following optional modules:

  • Organisational Leadership
  • Human Resource Development and Knowledge Management
  • Work Integrated Learning
  • Coaching in Organisations.

Students who have completed a Placement or Study Year Abroad (and passed the relevant module) are not required to choose an optional module.

The University continually enhances our offer by responding to feedback from our students and other stakeholders, ensuring the curriculum is kept up to date and our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need for the real world. This may result in changes to the course. Learning and Teaching

Traditional lectures are only one part of the course, you will also learn through seminars and workshops supported by on-line learning through Blackboard, together with exposure to real life examples through case studies, occasional organisational visits and guest practitioner speakers.

Study time

The course is delivered on a flexible part-time (daytime or evening delivery) or full-time basis to meet the needs of a wide range of learners and provide flexible provision for employers.

The full-time route involves regular attendance at the college during the week with the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the workplace at the same time.

Assessment

There are a variety of assessment methods. These will include timed assignments such as examinations, presentations and in-class tests, business and management reports, individual and group projects, personal development portfolios and self-assessment of the placement.

Features

Placements

This course has been designed specifically to meet the needs of local (and national) employers and to enable you to develop the skills and competences required by industry.

The accessibility and flexibility of the FdA allows you to 'earn whilst you learn' and to relate your studies to the business environment in which you are working.

Throughout the course, support is provided by academic staff, module leaders and support staff. You will have a Work Placement Supervisor who will provide support and guidance whilst on work placement/on your work-based learning.

Study facilities

Knightstone Campus is situated just a few minutes' walk from the Weston town centre and has undergone extensive refurbishments to provide high quality facilities for our students studying work-related courses including the well-resourced LibraryPlus.

Careers

Careers / Further study

You may have the opportunity to continue your studies for a further year to complete an Honours Degree in Business Management. If you choose to go into employment, the course will prepare you for a diverse range of jobs in the business environment whilst having the added benefit of providing valuable and practical work experience.

On successful completion of the foundation degree you can progress onto one of the relevant honours degrees offered by UWE. Your tutor will help you make the right choice for you.
