Introduction

Coaching and mentoring are essential tools for developing skills and knowledge within organisations and an effective coach or mentor can have a big impact on individual and organisational performance. Increasingly organisations are recognising that there is a strong link between attracting and retaining talented individuals and the attention paid to their career and personal development.

The Coaching and Mentoring course at Bristol Business School is designed to equip you with the essential tools and knowledge needed to be an effective coach and mentor. This course combines the latest theory and practice with a focus on putting your learning into practice in the workplace, and reflecting and building on these experiences within the group. On completion you have the option to gain Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) accreditation and a qualification.

This course has been of interest to managers and leaders in organisation in supporting the organisation through change and complexity as well as to those who wish to be full-time coaches and mentors.

Structure

Content

The course is based on a modular structure, enabling you to tailor your learning to your needs and interests. To complete the Postgraduate Certificate it is recommended that you complete the following modules:

  • Coaching and Mentoring - this module will provide you with opportunities to develop an understanding of theoretical models, skills and frameworks to underpin coaching and mentoring practice.
  • Leading and Managing People - develops your understanding of and skills in leading and managing people. The module will provide you with opportunities to develop an understanding of theoretical models, skills and frameworks to underpin leadership and management practice.
  • Group Facilitation - critically review and evaluate a range of theories and approaches to facilitation, equipping you with the skills to enable groups of people to perform productively in an organisational context.
  • Personal Mastery in Leadership - facilitates your critical self-knowledge and the contribution that your own wellbeing makes to effective leadership. The module will consider how personal characteristics can support development in complex contemporary working environments.

The following option modules are available (subject to demand).

Optional modules:

  • Professional Practice in Executive Coaching and Leadership Mentoring - critically review your own abilities to perform effectively as an executive coach and leadership mentor and to develop your own authentic approach.
  • Building Effective Working Relationships - provides you with opportunities to develop an understanding of relevant theoretical frameworks and models and to practice the skills required to build effective working relationships.
  • Groups, Teams and Organisations - facilitates your understanding of the fundamental principles of group dynamics, exploring the application of these principles to organisational context. It also offers an introduction to the application of psychodynamic ideas in the understanding of groups and teams.
  • Interventions for Creativity and Change - enables you to develop a critical understanding of the theory and practice of a range of interventions for creativity and change, analysing their relevance and developing insights into effective use of creative methods in different organisational contexts.
  • Leading Change - critically evaluate a range of theories and approaches to change, evaluating the implications of diversity and multiple perspectives in managing change in complex, diverse organisations.

Teaching and learning

You'll learn through a variety of methods designed to encourage plenty of active involvement, including workshops and seminar sessions, as well as through group work and independent study. There is a particular focus on putting your skills and knowledge into practice in the workplace and reflecting and building in this within the course group. 

Assessment

The course uses a balanced range of assessment methods, including formal tutor assessment, informal tutor assessment, and informal peer review and feedback.  Formal test methods include mini projects, essays, learning portfolios, case studies and presentations; informal methods include in-class work on current academic research and understanding, and practical and experiential exercises.

Special Features

Professional accreditation

Upon completion of the Certificate you have the option to gain the ILM level 7 Certificate in Executive Coaching and Leadership Mentoring, for a small registration fee.

Study facilities

Support is provided through the library and an extensive computing network, and all modules make use of the VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) for web enhanced delivery and to provide 24/7 access to resources both on and off campus.

Careers/further study

The course is suitable for managers and leaders who coach and/or mentor staff within their role as well as human resources, professionals, management consultants and professional coaches and mentors.

Entry

Entry requirements

This is a demanding and rewarding professional programme. As well as an enthusiasm for learning and for developing people, you will need:

  • An honours degree (minimum 2:2) from a recognised Higher Education institution or the equivalent from a recognised overseas institution

OR

  • An HND or equivalent professional award (for example, at NVQ 4), plus two years of relevant work experience

OR

  • At least two years in a role with leadership or management responsibility or as a consultant/sole practitioner. Applicants may be interviewed prior to acceptance and may be asked to undertake an additional pre-entry assessment

If English is not your first language, you will be required to meet the UK Border Agency and Universities minimum English Language requirements, such as:

  • The International English Language Test (IELTS) 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all components.
