The 20 credit Current issues in Community Practice module is available at level 6 module (UZTS7M-20-3) and level 7 (UZTS7N-20-M).

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

At level 6 (undergraduate level)

  • Analyse literature, research and policy relating to contemporary community nursing practice
  • Identify areas for service improvement and innovation within their practice, and formulate effective strategies in response
  • Analyse the opportunities for and challenges to integrated practice within community settings
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of public health and its application to their practice
  • Critically appraise ethical and legal issues relating to their professional practice

At level 7 (Masters level)

  • Demonstrate in-depth and advanced knowledge and understanding of literature, research and policy at the forefront of contemporary community nursing practice
  • Synthesise a wide range of evidence in order to initiate and lead service improvement, reaching judgements which extend beyond taught concepts
  • Critically evaluate the opportunities for and challenges to integrated practice within the community setting
  • Evidence comprehensive knowledge and understanding of public health and critically evaluate its application to practice
  • Critically appraise ethical and legal issues relating to their professional practice .

Entry requirements

  • Active registration on Part One of the NMC register.
  • Must be working in an area of practice that allows the student to meet the module learning outcomes.
  • Students undertaking the Specialist Practitioner Qualification (SPQ) must have completed a period of experience of sufficient length to have consolidated pre-registration outcomes and to have gained a deeper understanding in relevant professional practice.

Content

The module content typically includes:

Health and Social Care Policy

  • Health and social care policy: how services and individuals respond to, initiate and deliver policy
  • Public Health / Health Promotion and making every contact count

Strategic working practices

  • Commissioning and contracting mechanisms
  • Networking, influencing and political leadership in the context of community nursing
  • Articulating the value (of professional contribution)
  • Service evaluation
  • Responding to the quality agenda.

Managing and coordinating care

  • Caseload management and coordinating complex care
  • Managing risk
  • Managing and leading teams
  • Service user and carer involvement.

Integrated working (inter-professional & inter-agency)

  • Concepts of partnership and co-production
  • Teamwork and integration.

Learning and Teaching

A variety of approaches will be used which may include:

  • Lectures
  • Seminars
  • Action Learning
  • ICT based platforms
  • Formative assessment opportunity.

Study time

A total of 48 hours in the form of seminars, lectures and online activities.

Assessment


You will be asked to critically analyse the impact of a policy on current practice.

Students studying at level 7 (Masters level) will need to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of policy issues and demonstrate originality in recommendations for future care and services, with a particular focus on opportunities and change at a strategic level.

Formative assessment will take place through supervision of group work and discussion, as well as tutorial support and review of draft work.
