Introduction

The University of the West of England is recognised nationally and internationally as one of the leading centres for education in Environmental Health. This innovative programme has been developed for graduates of CIEH accredited undergraduate and postgraduate Environmental Health programmes who wish to complete the professional requirements (Professional Practice Portfolio (PPP) and Professional Interview) for registration as an Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP). The programme will provide students the opportunity to participate and be assessed in a series of intervention areas within the intervention fields which are required for the Professional Practice Portfolio (PPP) and Professional Interview assessment.

The programme and assessment has been accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and is recognised by them as an alternative route to registration with the Environmental Health Officers Registration Board (EHRB).

Structure

Content

All students participate in the following core modules:

PgDip Integrated Professional Development (EH):

  • Food Safety
  • Health and Safety
  • Housing and Health
  • Environmental Protection
  • Public Health
  • Integrating Environmental Health Practice

Students will also have the opportunity to top up to MSc by completing:

  • Research Project Skills
  • Dissertation

Teaching and learning

Each module is based around five practical activities. As far as possible we have attempted to avoid group activities, allowing individual students to develop the required skills and competences. Complementing individual field-based activities will be simulation activities online and desk-based as well as group visits. The induction programme will orientate students to the University and support learning as well as developing the practical and cognitive skills which will be demonstrated in the practice modules. Students will be provided with pre-reading and briefs for activities in advance of block attendance.

Integrating Environmental Health Practice will encourage students to build on knowledge, skills and experience of the five intervention areas and develop a holistic understanding of Environmental Health. This is assessed by Professional Interview.

Supporting Students

All students will have full online access to library and blackboard, where we will host much of the supporting material. The modules will be assessed by portfolio which is developed and assessed on line. This provides the opportunity for ongoing formative feedback from tutors to students.

Professional/ academic support and mentoring will be the responsibility of the programme team and students will be allocated individual tutors for support and guidance. All mentors are qualified Environmental Health Practitioners who have experience of working with students preparing for professional assessments. In addition student advisors are available to provide guidance in directing students to university resources and support services.

Special Features

Professional accreditation

This programme has been accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) as an alternative route to registration. Students who elect to take this programme will have their Professional Practice Portfolio (PPP) assessed by the University.

We also welcome applications from students who wish to engage in the intervention area activities and use these for CIEH assessed Professional Practice Portfolios (from September 2013). There will a reduced fee for students who wish to participate in a non-assessed version of the module.

For fully qualified Environmental Health Practitioners, the opportunity exists to use their Experiential Learning Portfolios (ELP)  or Professional Practice Portfolios (PPP) as accredited experiential learning towards an MSc in Integrated Professional Development (EH). Applicants interested in this route should contact Dr Lucy Meredith in the first instance.
