Introduction

Our Middle Manager Training Course is an exciting course leading on from our First Line Manager course designed to give those looking to progress their career in management further skills and techniques to succeed in their role as an effective manager.

The course gives you space to work closely with your course peers to explore real life examples you will bring to the training days. The course is structured over a six month period to allow you to take away your learning in the training sessions and look to apply your learning in the workplace and most importantly reflect on this and gain feedback from the tutor and peers, ensuring that you not only learn tools and techniques to being an effective manager, but provide the chance to apply and assess these during the course.

Successful completion of your training days and assessments will see you achieve an ILM Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management to help boost your CV and add to your personal development in the workplace.

Our Middle Managers Training Course is designed for individuals who are practising middle managers or current first line managers aspiring to progress in their management career. This course will help you to develop your skills and experience, improve performance and prepare you for more senior management responsibilities.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. However due to the nature of the assessments, you will be required to be in a team leader/management position to be able to draw from personal experience to complete the assessments.

Course Structure

Day 1 - Getting to know us and each other, identifying learning needs

The first day will include introductions to the programme; your fellow participants; the tutors and to the university. It will encourage you to reflect on your own leadership and management capabilities.

This session will also include an introduction to the library and to the support systems available to you whilst working with UWE Bristol towards your qualification. 

Topics covered in today's session will include:-

  • Understand what learning is
  • How to manage your learning on the programme
  • Understanding how your learning fits within your organisational context
  • Identifying what might get in the way of your learning and methods to overcome these challenges
  • Making the most of the resources around you

By the end of the day you will be able to:-

  • Have clarity over how you want to use the programme to support your development as a manager
  • Have identified the most effective conditions to support your learning
  • Planned how you will manage your learning over the next 6 months
  • Considered how you will use the resources available to you at UWE and within your organisation

Day 2 and 3 Becoming and Effective Leader

It is recognised that to become an effective leader it is important to be aware of 'difference' such as, different employees responding to different leadership styles and different situations demanding different responses. These two days look to support you to increase your knowledge and understanding of different leadership styles in relation to your own leadership practice and your own preferences. New insights into 'self', practice and theory.

Topics covered in the session will include:-

  • The roles and responsibilities of leaders and managers
  • Some leadership theories, their use and their usefulness
  • Emotional intelligence and the importance of knowing yourself and your preferred leadership style
  • The importance of flexibility
  • Theory and practice of motivation, delegation and empowerment

By the end of the day you will be able to:

  • Evaluate your own ability to use a range of leadership styles, in different situations and with different types of people, to fulfil the leadership role
  • Use theories of emotional intelligence to review the effect of emotions on your own and others' performance
  • Review your own ability to set direction and communicate this to others
  • Review your own ability to motivate, delegate and empower others
  • Produce a personal development plan to improve your own ability to lead

Day 4 - Handling Difficult Conversations

At some point in our leadership career, most of us will have to deal with under-performance of a team member, face conflict or simply break some news we know the recipient won't want to hear. The temptation to postpone the conversation in the hope it will go away can be strong.

This day will introduce a range of tools and techniques to help you deal confidently and courageously with those difficult conversations to the benefit of all.

Topics covered in the sessions will include:-

  • What are difficult conversations and how to undertake them with employees?
  • How to plan effectively to undertake difficult conversations
  • How to deal with emotions during difficult conversations

By the end of the sessions you will be able to:

  • Feel confident to approach a difficult conversation in a positive way
  • Use a range of tools and techniques to lead difficult conversations effectively
  • Recognise the benefit to dealing with difficult conversations rather than avoiding them

Day 5 and 6 - Leading Innovation and Change

As the pace of change continues to accelerate, so too is the ability to get from idea to innovation quickly and effectively at a premium. This session will introduce a variety of tools, as well as divergent and convergent thinking skills, you can use with your team when you need novel ideas and to solve problems creatively

Topics covered in the session will include:-

  • Principals and practice of creativity and innovation
  • Stakeholder involvement in change
  • Use of organisational analysis tools, PESTLE, SWOT etc
  • Communication and its role to overcome barriers and resistance
  • Leadership models and their role in change
  • Principles of organisational development
  • Planning techniques and tolls for planning change and evaluating outcomes

By the end of the sessions you will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of innovation for your own organisation
  • Explain the importance of managing change within own organisation
  • Assess an opportunity for innovation and improvement in own organisation
  • Justify the improvement identified, in the context of organisational objectives
  • Use a range of techniques to generate innovative options to deliver the improvement identified
  • Evaluate options for generating the proposed improvement to determine feasibility and viability
  • Create a change management plan that is designed to meet stakeholders' expectations
  • Implement the change management plan, monitoring progress against agreed targets

Days 7 and 8 - The manager as a coach and mentor

Coaching and mentoring employees rather than using more traditional management techniques helps empower and enable individuals or teams to take the action they need to complete tasks to the best of their ability. Coaching and mentoring is increasingly recognised as a flexible and effective way of supporting staff.

These sessions will look to help you as managers to understand what coaching and mentoring are, how these skills fit with effective management and to acquire practical techniques to use in their everyday life.

Topics covered in the session will include:-

  • Coaching and mentoring - what are they?
  • When are coaching and mentoring appropriate?
  • Knowledge, skills and attitudes?
  • Structuring coaching and mentoring conversations- requirements at each stage - Active listening; questioning; contracting, building rapport and trust building; and goal setting
  • Undertaking either a coaching or mentoring session
  • Your organisation? What required?

By the end of the sessions you will be able to:-

List the similarities and differences between coaching and mentoring

  • Describe how they could use a coaching and mentoring approaches within their role as managers and leaders
  • Analyse the critical skills, knowledge, behaviors and  attitudes required for effective ethical coaching and mentoring
  • Undertake at least one coaching or mentoring session using a given model and reflect on outcomes and own behavior
  • Discuss how to monitor and evaluate the impact of coaching and mentoring in the workplace.

Day 9 - Motivating your team to a higher performance

This session will move the focus on self to others, to consider team roles; group dynamics; and leader-follower relations. High performing teams don't just happen. Every team is different but the factors that determine a team's success or otherwise are well understood and can be developed so that it isn't something that is left to chance.

 Developing teams of people who work well together and who harness the differing strengths and attributes of all team members, needs leaders who understand the process involved and are prepared to put effort into the things that make a real difference.

This module explores group and team dynamics and team roles and what it takes to foster a high performing team.

Topics in the session will include:-

  • Theories of motivation and how they apply to team and individuals
  • Factors that affect performance and motivations including individual needs and differences, managers behaviour
  • Understand how individuals and teams are motivated and the limitations of traditional theories of motivation

By the end of the session you will be able to:-

  • Understand the potential conflict between team and individual motivation
  • Explore a range of tools and techniques to identify different motivational needs
  • ·Be able to use positive approaches to offset negative attitudes in the workplace.

Post training session: Complete your 'Motivating your team to a higher performance' assignment.

Day 10 Reflecting on practice and planning your future development

This final session will provide you with the opportunity to reflect on your learning on the course. Working together you will then look to identity how you plan to take this forward in your role and workplace, implementing your personal development plan

Topics covered in the session will include:-

  • Putting your learning into practice
  • Identifying opportunities to develop competence
  • Reviewing progress
  • Identifying mechanisms to gain feedback on your progress
  • Understanding the value and purpose of reflective practice

By the end of the sessions you will be able to:

  • Use reflective tools to identify key learning points from the leadership programme
  • Update your skills and identify further training needs

How will I learn?

Our open courses are practical training days designed to give you an opportunity to look, analyse and discuss with our tutors and your peers the subject area and explore possible approaches and tools and techniques available to use.  Alongside each face-to-face training day you will have will have access to online tools and materials, designed to support you further through your learning of the ILM unit.

Study time

What commitment do I have to make?

You will be required to attend all face-to-face training days and structure your own personal learning time, to build on what you learn in the sessions. You will also be required to complete your ILM assessments to set submission dates.

On successful completion of your qualification you will be invited to join us at our ILM award presentation to collect your certificate and celebrate your achievement.

To achieve the ILM Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management as part of this course, you will be required to complete four unit assessments by the given hand-in dates.

Our professional courses are run at our dedicated Bristol Business Engagement Centre, providing a professional environment for your training needs. Located at Frenchay Campus, with easy access to the M4 and M5 motorways and Bristol Parkway rail station, it has four fully equipped training rooms, a communications and reception area.

To be able to fully participate in our course, you will need to be comfortable with using the Internet and searching for information online. Session materials are presented through anumber of sources including Microsoft Word, Power Point, pdf and online workbooks and discussions.

As a leaner at the UWE Bristol, you will also have full access to our library on campus and all online materials and resources. Alongside this, you will be registered onto the ILM qualification and able to register for your ILM study membership and its range of benefits.
