Introduction

This bite-sized short course is delivered online and is referred to as a ‘topic’. There are around 60 such topics currently available for you to choose from. These can be studied individually to increase your understanding or for continuing professional development (CPD) purposes or in combination as part of an academic qualification.

GIS: Definitions is offered as an accompanying topic to GIS: Theories and as such you will not be charged a fee. However, you will still need to register on the topic as normal.

The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is growing in popularity these days – both in a wide variety of industries and in an academic environment. As a result, GIS has come to mean many different things to the many different members of the GIS user community. This makes it quite difficult to find a simple and succinct definition.

Entry Requirements

You do not require any prior knowledge or skills to complete this topic. This topic is offered as a free accompaniment to GIS: Theories, for students who require a refresher in the subject of GIS before undertaking GIS: Theories.  Although there is no fee attached to this topic, you need to register on this topic as normal.

Course content

At the end of the topic you should be able to:

  • understand the discipline of GIS in a very broad sense
  • describe GIS and the allied discipline of cartography (mapping)
  • relate GIS to your role in an organisation.

Study time

The material is delivered via the internet and contains approximately 12 hours of study. Our online delivery gives you complete flexibility about when and where you choose to study. You can work through the material at your own pace and you can dip in and out at times that suit your professional and personal needs.

Assessment

Whilst this topic/course can be studied individually for continuing professional development (CPD) purposes, it is also possible to pay for additional assessment which (taken in combination with other online topics) can be used to gain credit towards an MA in Spatial Planning.
