Introduction

This introductory level family therapy training course meets all the requirements of an AFT accredited introductory training for family therapy and systemic practice. The course is distinguished by its emphasis on teaching family therapy knowledge and practice in a practical way. Thus a key element of the course involves working with student's own personal, family and professional histories with direct reference to their current working practices.

The course is multi disciplinary with the aim of providing a rich opportunity for participants working in a range of contexts (with children, adults and families) to learn about the theory and practice of family therapy. We aim to provide a mix of theoretical ideas, skills practice and case application in an engaging, experiential way which draws upon students' own existing skills, knowledge and life experience. Students should come prepared to share their personal histories as well as case examples.

This course is accredited by AFT as an introductory level family therapy course. It does not carry any academic credits or awards.

Teaching and learning

The teaching process is consonant with systemic approaches in that the facilitators are constantly reflecting upon and working actively with group process. The group learning system is used to help students be aware of systemic processes and patterns both within themselves and in the group, including between the facilitators and the group. Students are encouraged to form mentor groups (via email or to meet up if geographically close) so that learning can be kept alive between teaching blocks.

Extra information

Practice Component:

We require, as far as is possible, for students to use the ideas and skills they have gained from the course in their work settings.  We expect this practice to be supervised as part of their normal agency supervision arrangements. Whilst there are no formal requirements for practice hours, we expect students to bring case material which often forms the basis of role plays in the teaching sessions.
