Introduction
This part-time course will help you develop awareness, understanding and competence in the practical processes associated with traffic engineering and will help develop your career in this area.
Special features
The course is designed for: engineering technicians working in highway and traffic engineering who want to build on their qualifications; graduates from other disciplines who want to change career direction; and incorporated and chartered engineers who would like a mid-career update.
The modules included in this course can be taken as stand-alone continuing professional development (CPD) units; or credited as additional study for HND Civil Engineering students on route to an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) qualification, or as additional technical study for BEng Civil Engineering graduates on route to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
Structure
Content
The course is divided into nine modules. You will study four each year with a concluding work-based project in the final year. You will develop your knowledge of traffic engineering, as well as your own skills and competencies to help your career progression.
The subjects covered in the course include development control; junction design; economic and environmental appraisal of road schemes; road safety investigation; traffic management, signal control and data collection; transport administration policy and legislation.
You will study mainly through online learning. This is supported by one contact day per module, where you will engage in group working, tutorials and workshops. For your convenience you will have a choice of attending different centres around the country.

Professional accreditation
The Certificate is recognised by the Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers as further learning leading to IEng qualification (accreditation pending).

This course enables people working in traffic engineering to develop and demonstrate their competence as effective technicians, and is an important step in career progression.

HNC/HND/ Foundation Degree / Degree in any subject.
We will also consider applicants with A Level / National Certificate / National Diploma if they have substantial relevant experience.
