Introduction

All organisations need effective leadership, and managers who can demonstrate an awareness of global business issues will always be sought after by employers. This one year, full-time course will give you the expertise and knowledge as well as the analytical and research skills needed to perform a managerial role in an international organisation. There is also a comprehensive personal development programme within this degree to enable you to develop a range of self management skills. It is a course that attracts talented students from around the world, and the chance to work and learn in such a strong multicultural environment is ideal preparation for working in international organisations.

Structure

Content

The Postgraduate Certificate is made up of four of the seven core modules detailed below.

Core modules:

  • People and Organisations in an International Context - explores the challenges, tensions and issues involved in the complex relationships between people and organisations
  • Strategic Analysis - will allow you to become familiar with economics and strategy terminology and develop an understanding of strategic analysis and practice.
  • Delivering Customer Requirements - introduces you to marketing and operations management knowledge in the context of understanding customers and fulfilling those requirements in ways that give greatest value to both customers and the organisation
  • Managing Finance - to develop understanding of the principles and techniques of information management and managing finance to support decision-making in a global context.
  • International Management - focuses on the management challenges associated with developing strategies and managing the operations of companies whose activities stretch across national boundaries
  • Globalisation - focuses on the concepts, structures and dynamics of globalisation and problems and perspectives of global capitalism

The Postgraduate Diploma is made up of the remaining core module and two additional option modules.

Masters

Dissertation:

  • Management Research - provides you with the research training sufficient to plan, undertake and manage effectively a dissertation.

In addition to these modules, your dissertation gives you the chance to research an area of international management which is of particular interest to you and of relevance to your career or company. Alternatively it can relate to your placement experience, if you choose to take one up.

Teaching and learning

You will begin by learning core information gathering and presentation skills, including library research and use of web-based resources. You will use in-depth business case studies to learn about the problems of decision-making in international organisations and the challenges of working in teams.

You'll learn though formal classes and seminar sessions, as well as through group work and independent study. The work will include assignments, exercises, case studies and presentations with an emphasis on independent learning to develop your problem-solving skills.

Full-time attendance

If you opt for the full-time course, you'll attend the Business School for one year.

Assessment

Assessment is through supervised mini-projects, presentations, time-constrained assignments and examinations.

You could work in roles such as: international project manager, international sales manager, service manager, communications manager, product manager, retail programme manager, business development manager.

Entry requirements

You'll need:

  • A good honours degree (minimum 2.2) from a recognised Higher Education institution or equivalent from a recognised overseas institution.

If English is not your first language, you will be required to meet the UK Border Agency and Universities minimum English Language requirements, such as:

  • the International English Language Test (IELTS) 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all components
