Structure

Content

The Postgraduate Certificate is made up of four of the five core modules detailed below.

Core modules:

  • Marketing Strategy - understand and critically evaluate how the marketing function contributes to the identification, development, implementation and monitoring of organisational strategy.
  • Principles of Marketing Communication Strategy - understand the concept and practice of persuasive communications as a vital and dynamic component of today's marketing mix, with particular focus on advertising and campaign evaluation.
  • Business Information for Marketing - provide a greater appreciation of the role of management accounting information within organisations and how it can be used to assist marketing managers with planning and decision-making.
  • Buyer Behaviour - understand and apply behavioural theories and concepts and evaluate the contributions of the behavioural sciences to choice behaviour.
  • Marketing Research - to develop your knowledge of marketing research theory and practice and to develop their abilities to design and undertake relevant and appropriate research activity in pursuit of answers to marketing problems.

The Postgraduate Diploma is made up of the remaining core module and three additional option modules.

Option modules:

Choose three additional subjects from the option modules* below; allowing you to specialise in areas relevant to your chosen career path:

  • Global Marketing - applying marketing management skills to marketing problem solving in a variety of international and global contexts.
  • Social Marketing Principles and Policy - exploring the fundamental principles of social marketing, and to gain or improve skills relating to the design and implementation of social marketing interventions.
  • Public Relations - understanding the challenges and approaches to managing Public Relations and organisational communication campaigns in the context of a constantly evolving communications environment.
  • Customer Relationship Management - providing specialist knowledge required for the effective management of important customer relationships and to integrate this knowledge in the solution of relevant problems.
  • Interactive Marketing - providing a framework for implementing interactive marketing in a marketing management context, reflecting changes in the traditional marketing paradigm.

Masters

Dissertation:

In addition to these modules, your dissertation gives you the chance to research an area of marketing of particular interest to you and of relevance to your career or company. You will attend a number of dissertation workshops to provide you with the research training sufficient to produce a quality dissertation. Previous dissertation topics include:

  • From Bond to Beckham - the evolution of male grooming
  • Success factors in Capital and Revenue projects within Bristol Parks
  • What influences pre adolescent girls to buy in a social network

Teaching and learning

You'll learn though formal classes and seminar sessions, as well as through group work and independent study. The work will include assignments, exercises, case studies and presentations with an emphasis on independent learning to develop your problem-solving skills.

Full-time attendance

If you opt for the full-time course, you'll attend the Business School for one year.

 

Assessment

Assessment is through supervised mini-projects, presentations, time-constrained assignments and examinations.

The professional skills of the marketing expert are increasingly a passport through to the most senior positions in companies, which include roles such as a Digital Marketing Manager, Commercial Director, Marketing and Development Manger, Head of Business Development and Marketing, and Senior Direct Marketing Manager.

Entry

Entry requirements

You'll need:

  • a good honours degree (minimum 2:2) from a recognised Higher Education institution or equivalent from a recognised overseas institution, or
  • several years marketing or general business experience.

If English is not your first language, you will be required to meet the UK Border Agency and Universities minimum English Language requirements, such as:

  • the International English Language Test (IELTS) 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all components
