Introduction
Coaching and mentoring are essential tools for developing skills and knowledge within organisations and an effective coach or mentor can have a big impact on individual and organisational performance. Increasingly organisations are recognising that there is a strong link between attracting and retaining talented individuals and the attention paid to their career and personal development.
The Coaching and Mentoring course at Bristol Business School is designed to equip you with the essential tools and knowledge needed to be an effective coach and mentor. This course combines the latest theory and practice with a focus on putting into practice your learning back in the workplace and reflecting and building on these experiences within the group.
The programme has been accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management. Upon completion of the Certificate (year 1) students have the option to gain the ILM level 7 Certificate in Executive Coaching and Leadership Mentoring, for a small registration fee. Those undertaking the Practitioner Route are able to register and obtain the ILM level 7 Diploma in Executive Coaching and Leadership Mentoring.

Content
Postgraduate Certificate (Year 1)
Core modules:
- Coaching and Mentoring - this module will provide you with opportunities to develop an understanding of theoretical models, skills and frameworks to underpin coaching and mentoring practice.
- Facilitation Skills - the module will provide students with opportunities to develop understanding of both the theoretical and practical approaches, skills and frameworks that underpin excellence in facilitation.
- Self-Leadership - this module is designed to explore and facilitate your critical self-knowledge and the contribution their own well-being (physical and emotional) makes to effective leadership of self and others.
- Leading and Managing People - develop your understanding of and skills in leading and managing people. The module will provide you with opportunities to develop an understanding of theoretical models, skills and frameworks to underpin leadership and management practice.
Postgraduate Diploma (Year 2)
Core modules:
- Creative Methods in Organisational Interventions - explore the role and contribution of creative methods in organisational interventions.
- Leading Complexity, Diversity and Change - increasing your understanding of change management and awareness of the importance of attending to issues of diversity in change processes.
Choose from the following optional modules:
Either
- Building Effective Working Relationships - will provide you with opportunities to develop an understanding of relevant theoretical frameworks and models and to practice the skills required to build effective working relationships, and
- Psychodynamic and Systemic Approaches - explore and facilitate your understanding of the fundamental principles of psychodynamic and systemic approaches and their application to helping relationships in the context of coaching and mentoring.
Or
- Professional Practice in Executive Coaching and Leadership Mentoring - critically review your own abilities to perform effectively as an executive coach and leadership mentor and to develop your own authentic approach.
Masters (Year 3)
Dissertation:
The final year will be spent undertaking an extended piece of Work-Based learning and research related to individual interest within chosen professional areas.
Teaching and learning
You'll learn through a variety of methods designed to encourage plenty of active involvement, including workshops and seminar sessions, as well as through group work and independent study. There is a particular focus on putting your skills and knowledge into practice in the workplace and reflecting and building in this within the course group.
Part-time attendance
The course is delivered in blocks of three days, four times a year to help you fit your study around work and personal commitments. You can choose to study for a Postgraduate Certificate, a Postgraduate Diploma or a Master's qualification.
We offer two routes to the Diploma and MSc in Coaching and Mentoring
- The Executive Route: primarily aimed at those using coaching and/or mentoring in their line management role.
- The Practitioner Route: most appropriate for professional coaches and mentors and anyone considering setting up their own coaching and mentoring practice. Those taking the Practitioner route need to complete and log a minimum of 125 hours coaching and/or mentoring during the course of the programme.
Assessment
The course will adopt a balanced range of assessment methods, including reflective logs, written assignments, case studies and presentations.

The course is suitable for managers and leaders who coach and/or mentor staff within their role as well as human resources, professionals, management consultants and professional coaches and mentors.
Entry
Entry requirements
This is a demanding and rewarding professional programme. As well as an enthusiasm for learning and for developing people, you will need:
- A minimum of two years experience in a management, coaching, mentoring or other relevant role, and
- An honours degree (minimum 2:2) from a recognised Higher Education institution or the equivalent from a recognised overseas institution.
Alternatively, you'll need comparable qualifications, knowledge and experience. Students without the above qualifications may still be eligible for entry to the course if they have significant high-level management or other relevant experience.
If English is not your first language, you will be required to meet the UK Border Agency and Universities minimum English Language requirements, such as:
- the International English Language Test (IELTS) 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all components
