The course introduces the essential building blocks of an analysis of financial markets. It is concerned with the time value of money, the benefits of diversification, an introduction to asset pricing, the characteristics of selected financial markets, and the fundamental ideas underpinning the pricing of financial instruments traded therein. It also considers recent events in the form of case studies, such as the 'credit crunch' and the collapse of Northern Rock.

Course content
Who is it for?
Managers and supervisors who need a basic understanding of financial instruments and the markets in which they are traded, or non-specialists who need to engage with the finance industry.

Course directors
The course is taught by Professor Jon Tucker, whose expertise is in corporate finance and financial markets, Professor Peter Howells, who is an expert in monetary economics and finance, Dr Cherif Guermat who is a specialist in empirical finance and Dr Iris Biefang-Frisancho Mariscal with expertise in monetary economics and finance. All tutors are members of the Centre for Global Finance.
