Introduction

Our Public Health Practitioner apprenticeship will enable you to progress your healthcare career to management or specialist roles. By completing the apprenticeship, you'll achieve a degree and gain eligibility to apply for accreditation as a Public Health Practitioner.

Why study for a Public Health Practitioner apprenticeship?

The Public Health Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship prepares entry-level professionals in organisations such as local authorities, the NHS and clinical commissioning groups, for more senior or specialist positions.

This practice-focused course offers you a grounding in public health across different settings, including wider determinants of health, such as education, transport and housing. You'll also grow your knowledge of core sector issues, from environmental sustainability to social equity.

You'll develop your critical thinking, analytical and appraisal skills, which you'll apply to real-world public health scenarios. This could be in the form of role-plays and simulations relevant to health protection, disease outbreaks and pandemics.

From the outset, you'll study alongside your job and apply your skills to on-the-job training. This applied approach ensures you're adaptable to a range of situations within the context of your workplace.

After completing the three-year apprenticeship, you'll graduate with a BSc(Hons) Public Health qualification, which is the first step towards becoming an accredited Public Health Practitioner.

Careers

On successful completion of our Public Health Practitioner apprenticeship, you'll achieve a BSc(Hons) Public Health degree (Level 6). You'll also be eligible to apply for accreditation as a Public Health Practitioner. So you'll be able to progress to management or specialist roles in a range of public health areas, from local authorities to prison healthcare and hospital trusts.

In addition to supporting your development in the workplace, this apprenticeship will help you to understand the career landscape in your sector and plan for your longer-term ambitions. Duration and delivery

The apprenticeship is delivered through full-time day release, over the duration of three years.

Tariff points: 112
GCSE: Grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics or equivalent (we accept Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English).
A-level subjects: No specific subjects required.

Entry requirements

To be an apprentice, you must be employed in a role that's relevant to the skill, trade or occupation you're being trained for. As part of your commitment to the apprenticeship, you'll have to complete at least six hours per week of off-the-job learning activity within your normal contracted working hours, which is supported by your employer.

We use the UCAS Tariff system to make offers to applicants. You can use the UCAS Tariff Calculator to convert your qualifications and grades into points.

Accredited Learning and Accredited Experiential Learning

You may be able to gain accreditation for prior learning from another institution (Accredited Learning). Or you may be able to get credit for learning achieved through experience that may not be formally accredited (Accredited Experiential Learning). ESFA eligibility requirements

To study an apprenticeship, you need to:

be aged 16 years or over
be an EEA citizen (with Right to Work in the UK) and not be in any other kind of full-time education (including being enrolled on any other apprenticeship programme)
be employed (for at least the full planned duration of your apprenticeship) in a role that is linked to the appropriate industry for the apprenticeship training
receive at least legal minimum wage for apprentices (wages vary depending on experience, employer and level or type of apprenticeship)
commit to at least six hours per week of apprenticeship training during your normal working hours
have support from your employer, including a mentor/line manager. Your employer is also responsible for funding your apprenticeship.
