Introduction

This 30 credit level 7 Ultrasound Imaging in Cardiac disease module builds upon the learning of the Introduction to Clinical Echocardiography module, exploring more advanced techniques and cardiac disease.

This module aims to enable trainees to perform cardiac imaging in a range of patients with cardiac disease, interact with patients and demonstrate safe, patient-centred practice. You will be expected to build practical skills in setting up the equipment used, produce reports, interpret results, explain procedures to patients and gain consent, while developing and building their professional practice.

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • describe the coronary anatomy and its correlation with 2D views of the left ventricle and the consequence after myocardial infarction.
  • describe and evaluate methods used to measure and evaluate left ventricular function and recognise normal and abnormal ventricular function.
  • discuss the echocardiographic features and assessment methods associated with cardiomyopathies, valvular disease, valve replacement and ventricular dysfunction and the relationship to surgical treatments.
  • discuss the pathology, causes and echocardiographic features associated with right ventricular dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension; endocarditis and the Duke criteria for diagnosing endocarditis; pericardial disease, cardiac masses, suspected acute pulmonary embolus and blunt/penetrating cardiac trauma.
  • evaluate advanced echo-techniques and acute presentation.

Structure

Content

The level 7 (Masters level) module syllabus typically includes the following topics:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system with particular reference to coronary anatomy.
  • Review of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology in cardiac valve disease.
  • Aetiology and echocardiographic features of cardiovascular pathophysiological conditions.
  • Recognition and evaluation of cardiovascular disorders using cardiac ultrasound and Doppler imaging in acquired, inherited and acute presentation.
  • A review of advanced echocardiography including congenital heart disease; emergency and ICU echocardiography; contrast and stress echocardiography and trans-oesophageal echocardiography; advanced assessment of ventricular function.

Learning and Teaching

The module will be delivered as a mixture of online and on-campus. On-campus sessions will be taught over two block weeks and will include both theoretical and practical laboratory sessions.

Assessment

Assessment for this module includes

  • a set exercise (two hours)
  • a video case report based on a cardiac pathology.
