Introduction

This 15 credit level 7 (Masters level) Leading Teacher Development module will enable you to reflect on relevant professional development frameworks and practices to inform future practice. This will deepen your understanding of the relevant theories of self-development and leading the development of others. The module is intended for current and aspiring leaders in schools.

The module aims to:

  • explore and evaluate theories of professional development relating this to the complexities of implementation in the school context
  • recognise the role that professional development plays in contributing to a culture of high expectations, leading to improved classroom teaching and outcomes for all students
  • develop an understanding of how professional development needs are identified and reviewed using a rigorous evidence base
  • raise understanding of the need for flexible pathways of professional development which adapt to developing expertise
  • recognise the importance of relationships, trust and honest reflections
  • develop an understanding of the continuous and sustained nature of implementation of professional development in schools.

On successful completion of this module, you will achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • critically apply, reflect on and analyse practitioner experiences and their impact in educational contexts
  • critically reflect on personal values and behaviours as a leader of teacher development
  • appraise and critically apply a relevant theoretical evidence base.

Careers / Further study

This 15 credit level 7 (Masters level) module can contribute towards the MA Education (three to five year version and two year version).

Content

The module syllabus typically covers the topics below:

  • Theory and models of educational professional development Improving outcomes through professional development
  • Shaping a clear vision for professional development
  • Evaluating needs, designing pathways and measuring quality, enhancement and change
  • Considerations for articulating and modelling good practice
  • Reflective enquiry into developing students as leaders of teacher development
  • Creating effective and collaborative environments for professional development
  • Leadership of contextualised professional development challenge.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods will include a mix of activities including webinars, meetings, lectures, readings, tasks and activities alongside independent study and tutor support.

Assessment

A written assignment (2,000-2,500 words) focusing on your chosen area of interest, critically reflecting on your practitioner experiences and exploring relevant theoretical evidence bases for purpose, theoretical framework, new or opposing ideas in order to develop and assess existing knowledge and experiences.
