Introduction

Why study civil and environmental engineering?

Combining innovation and theory, civil engineers develop solutions to the world's biggest challenges.

Civil engineering is a creative and technical subject which appeals to inventive, enthusiastic problem-solvers. It opens the door to a wide range of careers, from structural engineer to project manager.

The MEng Civil and Environmental Engineering course consists of core areas of structures, materials and geotechnics, alongside more specialist topics such as hydrology, transport engineering, geology and surveying.

You'll apply your learning through projects based on genuine issues, giving you valuable insights into challenges you may face in your career. During the group design project you'll learn to present cross-disciplinary solutions as if to a genuine client.

Year one

You will study:

  • Mathematics for Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Engineering Principles for Civil Engineering
  • Surveying
  • Environmental Engineering Field Study
  • Construction and Environmental Materials
  • Engineering Technology and Design
  • Engineering Communication.

Year two

You will study:

  • Structural Analysis
  • Design of Structural Elements
  • Soil Mechanics
  • Hydraulics and Engineering Applications
  • Project and Risk Management
  • Application of Mathematics for Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Placement year (if applicable)

If you study on the five year (sandwich) course, you'll spend a year away from the University on a work or study placement after year two.

Depending on which you choose, you'll either complete a placement learning or learning and development module.

Year three

You will study:

  • Independent Civil Engineering Project
  • Design and Implementation Project
  • Advanced Structural Analysis
  • Computational Civil Engineering
  • Geotechnics.

Plus one optional module from:

  • Traffic Management and Safety
  • Hydraulic Modelling for Flood Risk Management.

And one optional module from:

  • Environmental Assessment
  • Strategic Issues in Engineering.

Final year

You will study:

  • Group Civil and Environmental Engineering Project
  • Advanced Soil Mechanics
  • Non-linear Structural Analysis
  • Advanced Construction Materials and Technology
  • Project Management Principles
  • BIM in Design Coordination.

Plus one optional module from:

  • Transport Infrastructure Engineering
  • Advanced Water and Wastewater Engineering Design
  • Bridge Engineering.

This structure is for full-time students only. Part-time students study the same modules but the delivery pattern will be different.

Learning and Teaching

We tailor our teaching methods to suit the subject matter of each module. In general, you'll attend lectures and tutorials, as well as participating in field work, laboratories and group work.

Study time

Study this course full-time over four years or part-time for seven years. Alternatively, choose the five-year sandwich course and spend a year on a work or study placement.

Assessment

We make sure that assessment in each module suits the topics you have studied, so it will vary across the course. Assessment will include written examinations, presentations, practical examinations, coursework reports and portfolios.

Features

Placements

Students who get work experience tend to graduate with better degrees. Experience also hones your skills, industry knowledge and professional network, making you a sought after graduate.

If you choose the five year (sandwich) course, you'll spend a year away from the University on a work or study placement after the second year.

Placements are available with our partner employers, as well as organisations across the region. Past students have worked for water companies, local authorities, regional and international consultancies. Many of these employers have been so impressed with our placement students that they employed them on graduation.

You can also volunteer to help develop the infrastructure in developing countries through initiatives like Engineers without Borders.

Fieldwork

Fieldwork helps you gain valuable practical experience and a number of modules include site visits.

Destinations include Dartmoor in your first year, Wessex Water sites in your second year and an opportunity to travel overseas in your third year. During the second year you'll also have the chance to spend several days building small Construction Live projects.

Study facilities

You'll study in a modern building incorporating well-equipped laboratories for concrete and environmental science, hydraulics, environmental physics, earth sciences and surveying technology.

Carry out topography level surveys with our industry-standard surveying equipment.

Model and test hydrological and surface water drainage, map locations and design structures using geographic information systems (GIS) and statistical software in our computer labs.

Create and test structures in our concrete and physics labs, and explore theories in our hydraulics labs. Study and collaborate on group assignments in our dedicated Project Room.

This mix of learning environments will give you the best chance of absorbing essential knowledge and real-world skills, so you're all set for your professional career.

Careers / Further study

Civil engineers are in high demand, with numerous opportunities overseas as well as in the UK.

Graduates can choose from a range of disciplines. From geotechnical or civil engineering through to transport engineering, this qualification opens up extensive employment possibilities.

Supplementary fee information

Your overall entitlement to funding is based on how long the course is that you're registered on. Standard funding is allocated based on the standard number of years that your course lasts, plus one additional year.

You'll apply for funding each year that you study and Student Finance will take into account how long the course is in each year that you apply. So if you register for the fIve year course and then transfer to the four year course, the number of years you can apply for funding will change. Student Finance will reassess your funding based on how many years you have been in study, not just those years for which you received student finance.

Entry

Typical offers

  • Tariff points: 120
  • GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C/4 or above in English Language and Grade B/5 or above in Mathematics, or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
  • A-level subjects: Grade C or above in Mathematics. Points from General Studies and AS-level subjects (not taken onto full A-level) can be included towards the overall tariff. You must have a minimum of two A-levels.
  • Specific subjects: Maths requirement can also be met by the Cambridge Pre-U Mathematics at Merit 3.
  • EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: Must include Merit in one of the following units: Further Engineering Mathematics or Further Mathematics for Construction. Please list the units that you are taking in your application.
  • Access: Achievement of the HE Diploma; to include 30 Level 3 credits at Merit with 15 credits in Mathematics (before you apply, ask us which Maths units you need to do). Please list the units that you are taking in your application.
  • Baccalaureate IB: To include a minimum grade of 5 in higher level Mathematics.

Advanced entry

If you have HND or FdSc qualifications in closely related subjects, you may be able to join the course in the second year. If you have an HNC or other cognate qualifications, you may be credited with individual modules, which will shorten the course for you.

UWE Bristol's International College

If you are an international student and do not meet the academic or English language requirements to study this course, you can qualify by completing preparatory study at our International College.

Offer Types

If you have not received your exam results, your offer from us will be conditional and will be subject to you achieving the tariff points/grades required for your course.

If you have already satisfied the academic entry requirements of your chosen course, you are likely to be made an unconditional offer. Please note that we will only make unconditional offers if you have already achieved your qualifications.

To make sure our applicants are academically prepared for when they start their studies here, we do not make unconditional offers to those that are still studying their Level 3 qualifications (such as A levels, BTEC, Access or equivalent). We hope that this will encourage our applicants to value their academic achievements as much as we do.
