Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), this course gives you further skills, knowledge - and qualification - in Mechanical Engineering, to help prepare you for a range of exciting roles or career moves, or for further study.
Professional engineering institutions now require engineers to have at least Masters level knowledge, such as an MEng or MSc qualification, to achieve professional registration as a Chartered Engineer.
With many high-tech engineering companies now operating pan-European and globally, Master's level qualifications are often considered essential for career development.
Knowledge and research that leads the way
The MSc Mechanical Engineering is designed to allow BEng and BSc (Hons) Mechanical Engineering graduates, and those from related disciplines, to top up qualifications through the MSc-route equivalent of an MEng Mechanical Engineering.
The Department of Engineering Design and Mathematics has a longstanding reputation for offering IMechE-accredited BEng (Hons) and MEng Mechanical Engineering degrees, alongside a range of MSc programmes in related specialised subjects.
Graduates with an in-depth understanding of engineering design and analysis, and the ability to appreciate the challenges of managing complex operations, are in high demand.
This course is designed to meet that demand, and to bridge the skills and knowledge gaps for BEng or BSc graduates, and make them more employable.
With its foundations in mechanical engineering, this course is a great opportunity to learn how to develop advanced solutions to engineering problems using the latest computer tools and simulations.
It also addresses a need for people who work well in project teams, and an extended piece of independent research is a significant part of the course.

The optional modules listed are those that are most likely to be available, but they may be subject to change.
You will study the following compulsory modules:
- Masters Group Project - Working in groups on research programme design, along with design and development programmes, including stakeholder requirements, specification development, revision of design process, analysis and modelling, and design for manufacture as well as purpose.
- Innovations in Operations Management - An in-depth look at innovations strategy, managing operations and processes, open innovation and the underpinning theories of the management of innovation learning, resource based value and social capital.
- Dissertation (Masters).
In addition, you will select optional modules (according to credit requirements):
- Computer Vision and Modern Control
- Design of Fluid Systems
- Structural Integrity in Design
- Industrial Applications of Vision and Automation
- Intelligent and Adaptive Systems
- Mechanics of Composites
- Computational Fluid Dynamics
- Concurrent Engineering and Design for Manufacture
- Integrated Electro-Mechanical Systems.
The optional modules available to you may be determined by the subjects you have studied in your degree.
Please also note this structure is for the full-time course delivery only. For part-time delivery, the same modules will be studied. However, the structure will differ.

Learning and Teaching
The MSc Mechanical Engineering comprises a combination of taught modules and a dissertation.

For full-time students, the taught course is in two teaching blocks, from September to December, and then January to May. You then begin your dissertation.
Part-time students generally complete the course over two or more years. This allows for flexibility in the number of modules you can comfortably handle in one year alongside personal and professional commitments.
Assessment is through a combination of examinations and coursework, and your dissertation project.

This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) , which confirms it meets standards set by the Engineering Council for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).
An accredited degree gives you vital knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Some employers prefer recruiting graduates from accredited degrees, which are also more likely to be recognised by other countries that sign up to international accords.
In the Department and Engineering Design and Mathematics, all courses deemed appropriate for accreditation and exemption are inspected regularly by the relevant institutions.
Accreditation visits are cyclical, and it's important you check the current accreditation status for individual courses.
We host our own servers to provide Windows, Linux and Unix-based operating systems. There are over 500 workstations available in our teaching laboratories, as well as a large open-access laboratory that provides PC and Unix-based machines. We have our own IT Helpdesk and 24-hour computer labs on campus.
Our dedicated engineering facilities include a flight simulator, subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels, a motorsport workshop, specialist laboratories and industry-standard simulation suites.
We operate an extensive pastoral care system to provide guidance and support throughout your studies, including induction courses and access to academic staff and student advisers.

An accredited Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering provides an essential stepping stone for any mechanical engineer aspiring to take their career to the highest level.
Mechanical engineers are vital to society and the economy. For example, they're often involved in making maximum use of high-capital plants and operations such as power stations, oil refineries, chemical plants and hospitals.

We automatically send a message via your Welcome website plus an email to notify you once your Preparing to Study information is available. It is important that you regularly check your Welcome website for new messages.
We require one of the following:
- a honours degree of 2:1 or above in a related subject, accredited by the relevant professional body
- a honours degree of 2:2 or above in a related subject, accredited by the relevant professional body, and two years' relevant engineering experience.
Related subjects include: Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and Physics.

We can consider applicants who do not meet the normal entry requirements, but who do have relevant professional experience or qualifications. In your application, you should describe in detail your professional experience and qualifications.
English language support
If you meet the academic requirements but require additional support to take your language skills to the required level, you may be able to attend one of our pre-sessional English courses. Students who successfully complete the pre-sessional course can progress onto their chosen degree course without retaking an IELTS or equivalent.
