Why study marketing communication management?

Marketing communication management is a dynamic field that includes a range of disciplines.

Online and offline channels include advertising, digital marketing, public relations, direct marketing, design and sales promotion. Businesses need managers with a broad understanding of these fields, who can co-ordinate them on a strategic level.

To be successful in this field, you must be analytical yet highly creative. You should be a strategic thinker with the ability to communicate ideas to clients and colleagues.

In your first year, you'll develop a mini agency with its own brand, digital media presence, print materials and strategy based on what you've learned in tutorials.

It's ideal if you want a focused, hands-on approach to the creative and strategic aspects of marketing.

Class-based activities focus on developing your marketing knowledge through challenges and problem solving. You prepare for these sessions using videos, case studies, quizzes and research, so your contact time is always interactive and engaging.

You'll work in small groups with academics and employer mentors who will set challenges, provide feedback and guide your learning.

You'll address real-world issues from the start, using your new skills to address case studies and support local start-ups and charities with their marketing challenges. You'll graduate with professional experience and useful contacts to help kick-start your career.

If you choose to do a sandwich degree, you'll study abroad for a year with one of our partner universities or complete a work placement before your final year.

Where can it take me?

When you graduate, you'll have the skills to go directly into a wide range of careers; the majority of our Marketing Communications graduates report being in work or further study 6 months after graduating.

Bristol is the biggest creative hub outside London and we work closely with local businesses and agencies to secure mentoring and placements. According to Bristol Media, the skills gap of qualified marketers and account handlers in the South West means there's plenty of opportunity in the region.

You might work for a multinational 'through-the-line' agency or a small 'hot shop'. You could choose to work in-house or even start your own business.

Where possible, we make assessment resemble the processes and practices you find in industry.

You'll be assessed through exams and by the proposals, reports, presentations, exhibitions and posters you produce.

You'll also take on an independent project in an area of marketing communication management that interests you.

Professional accreditation

We encourage you to do a 40-week paid sandwich placement after Year two. It can be in the UK or abroad.

Your placement is valuable because it allows you to gain real-world experience and skills that increase your employability.

UWE Bristol has a growing network of placement organisations and students have secured marketing and business-related placements with Mini, Disney, Coca Cola, Intel and GlaxoSmithKline. There are also opportunities and support to set up your own business.

You'll get help to find your placement and support throughout from your department and the careers service.

Study year abroad

You'll also have opportunities to study overseas on courses that are taught in English and relevant to your degree. The study year abroad is not a paid placement.

Study facilities

In the new £55m Bristol Business School, you'll have access to modern learning spaces and facilities designed to provide collaborative and interactive learning opportunities.

Designed with student input, the Business School offers learning spaces for individual and group study plus conference rooms you can book. It's a space for students and businesses to work together and form new partnerships.

Our Study Skills section and regular workshops will help you develop information literacy and referencing skills. 

You'll have access to books, trade press, academic journals, and industry databases including MINTEL, Marketline Advantage, Passport and WARC both on and off campus.

UWE Bristol Marketing Society

Join our lively UWE Marketing Society, which brings students from all our marketing degrees together socially and academically.

The society provides a local business network for employees and students, organises regular events and a programme of guest speakers.

In the past, it's received UWE Bristol grants to run marketing workshops for local businesses, including a re-branding project with the UWE Students' Union.

You could become an advertising account executive, digital marketing executive, recruitment manager, sales manager.

Supplementary fee information

Your overall entitlement to funding is based on how long the course is that you're registered on. Standard funding is allocated based on the standard number of years that your course lasts, plus one additional year.

You'll apply for funding each year that you study and Student Finance will take into account how long the course is in each year that you apply. So if you register for the four year course and then transfer to the three year course, the number of years you can apply for funding will change. Student Finance will reassess your funding based on how many years you have been in study, not just those years for which you received student finance.

Typical offers

  • Tariff points: 112
  • GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C/4 or above in English Language and Mathematics, or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
  • English Language Requirement:

    If English isn't your first language, you will need to meet the UK Border Agency's and the University's minimum English language requirements such as the International English Language Test (IELTS) overall score of 6.0 with 5.5 in each component.

  • A-level subjects: No specific subjects needed. You can include points from A-Level General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) towards overall tariff. You must have at least two A-Levels.
  • Relevant subjects: Business, Media, Psychology, Maths, History and English Language and Literature.
  • EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: No specific subjects required.
  • Access: Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma; to include 15 level 3 credits at merit.
  • Baccalaureate IB: No specific subjects required.

Entry requirements

If you do not think you will be able to meet the entry requirements for entry into Year 1 of this course, you can consider applying for the Foundation Year of this or related degree courses.

If you have completed your qualifications and do not meet the normal entry requirements, but you can show us that you have relevant experience and capabilities that make you suited to this course, we will be pleased to consider your application. Please make sure your application form includes details of your experience and capabilities. If you are an international student and do not meet the academic or English language requirements to study this course, you can qualify by completing preparatory study at our International College.

Offer Types

If you have not received your exam results, your offer from us will be conditional and will be subject to you achieving the tariff points/grades required for your course.

If you have already satisfied the academic entry requirements of your chosen course, you are likely to be made an unconditional offer. Please note that we will only make unconditional offers if you have already achieved your qualifications.

To make sure our applicants are academically prepared for when they start their studies here, we do not make unconditional offers to those that are still studying their Level 3 qualifications (such as A levels, BTEC, Access or equivalent). We hope that this will encourage our applicants to value their academic achievements as much as we do.
