About
This 30 credit module, Co-production and Place-Based Methods, focuses on collaborative approaches to developing research together with practitioner partners to address food system challenges.
You'll learn how to use a mixed methods approach that include both qualitative and quantitative methods, spanning the social and natural sciences and which embed the research in the places where you seek to generate change.
This module is distinctive for its focus on co-production and place-based methods, which will enable you to design research with very practical applications and high likelihood of generating impact.
On successful completion of this module, you'll be able to:
- collaborate and work in a multi-disciplinary team to design place-based approaches to researching food system challenges, evidencing best practices in co-production.
- critically evaluate and justify choice of mixed methods to use when designing a research project.
- demonstrate good research and ethical practice across field-, lab- and social science-based research methods.
- construct a Theory of Change model.

Structure
Content
The module syllabus typically covers the following:
- Introduction to place-based methods
- Introduction to and good practice in co-production
- Research ethics and power
- Theory of Change
- Field work and in situ sampling methods
- Social science research methods: interviews, focus groups, participatory action
- Lab techniques
- Scenarios and futures mapping
- Innovation in practices (especially digital practices).
Learning and Teaching
The theory of co-production and place based methods will be delivered predominantly as practical activities, giving students opportunities to implement methods and practice techniques. Practical activities and field work are supported by and extend theoretical content covered in lectures.
Assessment
Assessment for this module comprises:
- a presentation (30 minutes) of a designed research protocol for a funding call, followed by a Q&A session: this will be undertaken in teams of 3-4 students.
- a 3,000 word report where you'll choose an interdisciplinary research question relevant to sustainable food systems and write a methods chapter as per a dissertation or thesis.
These assessments have been selected to enable learners to demonstrate skills gained in designing research protocols, carrying out research practices, analysing research data and writing up methods, results and discussion for research reports. Due to the collaborative nature of co-production and place-based methods, there will be a combination of group and individual assessments with peer assessment.
The methodology chapter is supported by a peer-assessed activity in which learners design and conduct a methodology of their choice.
