20 credit module at either level 3/FHEQ level 6 or level M/FHEQ level 7
Introduction
This 20 credit module, Children and Young People's Emergency Care, aims to provide registered healthcare practitioners with the underpinning knowledge and skills to deliver safe, holistic evidence-based emergency care to children and young people.
This module is available at both level 3/FHEQ level 6 and level M/FHEQ level 7.
On successful completion of this module, you will achieve the following learning outcomes:
At level 6
- identify and explain pathophysiological processes which can precipitate both illness and injury in children and young people, articulating the clinical application of this knowledge.
- conduct a safe and evidence-based assessment of the acutely unwell or injured neonate, child and adolescent.
- evaluate management options of the acutely unwell or injured child and/or young person within ethical and legal frameworks.
At level 7

- conduct a safe and evidence-based assessment of the acutely unwell or injured neonate, child and adolescent.

Entry requirements
You should be a registered nurse working in an Emergency Department, with experience of caring for children and young people for a minimum of 18 months. This module will teach you how to recognise and care for common paediatric conditions, but not diagnose. As a result, it is not suitable for ANPs/ENPs.

Content
The module syllabus typically includes the following topics:
- Principles of children and young people's emergency care
- Communicating with children, young people and their families
- Assessment of the unwell or injured neonate, child and young person
- Relevant anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology
- Management of common emergency presentations and conditions
- Child and adolescent mental health
- Safeguarding
Learning and Teaching
A variety of teaching methods will be used to create an inclusive learning environment including lectures, seminars, simulation, discussion, case-based learning, technology-enhanced learning and enquiry-based learning.
As the module has been designed utilising multiple learning approaches, you will require access to the internet.
Assessment
A 2500-word maximum written reflective assignment, exploring and critically evaluating the assessment and management of a child and/or young person in the emergency department.
