About
Public health is a field that is intimately linked to politics and economics. This module, Public Health Policy, Politics and Economics, will equip you with ideas from political science and policy studies to enable you to examine the origins, context and impacts of major public health issues.
In addition, you will learn how to apply economic frameworks to interpret the value of public health interventions. The module strikes a balance between building theoretical knowledge and understanding and practical application for anyone interested in promoting public health.
On successful completion of this level 7 (Masters level) module, you will be able to:
- reflect upon and critically evaluate the value, ideological and ethical bases of policy, political and economic issues in public health.
- demonstrate a critical understanding of the relationship between political science and public health in a range of contexts.
- demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the public health policy process and different conceptual approaches to policy analysis.
- demonstrate critical understanding of theoretical and methodological approaches in public health economic practice and the value of economic evidence for public health interventionsr

Content
The module syllabus typically includes the following topics:
- The value, ideological and ethical foundations of policy, political and economic issues in public health.
- Key concepts in political science for public health.
- The public policy process and policy analysis as applied to public health.
- Key theoretical and methodological approaches in public health economic practice.
- Critical appraisal of the validity and reliability of economic evidence for social value in public health interventions.
- Application of key concepts in the module to selected public health issues.
Learning and Teaching
This module is taught through a combination of formal lectures and interactive group sessions, including workshops and seminars. It is supplemented with self-directed study via online tasks, exercises and tailored reading. The module is supported by an online discussion forum.
Assessment
Assessment for this module comprises a summative project of 3,000 words with scheduled and unscheduled support to prepare for the assessment. Drawing upon key concepts in policy, politics and economics, you will critically discuss the origins and implementation of a selected public health initiative.
The assignment supports practice-based skills in appraising, briefing and influencing real world policy processes.
