Professional/Short course Rehabilitation
30 credit level 7 module
This module runs every other year as part of the MSc Rehabilitation.
About
This 30 credit module, Rehabilitation, explores rehabilitation as a diverse, adaptive and ethically grounded practice that responds to contemporary societal needs. It'll encourage you to critically interrogate the frameworks and perspectives that underpin rehabilitation, including the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), health promotion principles, recoveryoriented approaches, and the challenges faced by marginal or underserved populations.
This module aims to develop a critical, contextual and practiceinformed understanding of rehabilitation as a dynamic and evolving field. It further aims to promote rigorous critical analysis, debate and reflection on how rehabilitation is applied within students' own practice contexts, and where gaps, tensions or inequities may exist.
On successful completion of this module, you'll be able to:
- critically analyse the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and evaluate its application to contemporary rehabilitation practice.
- critically evaluate how health promotion principles and approaches inform, shape, and enhance contemporary rehabilitation practice across diverse health and social care contexts.
- critically analyse recovery oriented perspectives and assess how they influence rehabilitation approaches for individuals and populations with long term or complex conditions.
- critically examine how legislation, policy environments, social structures, and practitioner autonomy influence equitable access to rehabilitation for marginal, underserved, or excluded populations.

This level 7 (Masters level) module addresses four interrelated areas that underpin contemporary rehabilitation practice. These themes will be critically deconstructed to support learners in developing an advanced understanding of how rehabilitation theory translates into practice across diverse and changing environments.
The syllabus will typically include:
- a detailed examination of the ICF as a global, standardised framework for describing health, functioning and disability.
- analysis of health promotion as a growing priority within national and international health agendas, and its implications for sustainable rehabilitation.
- critical exploration of recovery as a key concept in mental health, longterm conditions and cancer care.
- ientification and evaluation of the needs of marginal or underserved populations whose circumstances challenge traditional rehabilitation pathways.
