BA(Hons) Primary Education covers all National Curriculum subjects and allows you to choose a specialism from Literacies and Language, Maths and Sciences, Arts, or Humanities.
You'll develop your skills in teaching five to eleven year olds, across key stages 1 and 2, to professional standards.
Deepen your knowledge and understanding through self-directed study, with an enquiry-based approach to your learning.
Read, discuss and question current policy and practice and make links between educational theory and practice. In your final year, you'll research and write a dissertation on a topic of your choice. Graduate with Qualified Teacher Status, ready to start your career as a teacher.
Approach this course as if it were a job. You'll work nine to five for most of your course working in diverse schools and settings with children from a range of cultural backgrounds, and across the spectrum of needs. Become an expert communicator, creating a positive, safe environment and a first-class educational experience for the children you work with.

Learning and Teaching
Learn through formal lectures, seminars and workshops, tutor and student-led study groups, and one-to-one tutorials.
You'll specialise in teaching across the primary phase at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 and develop your professional skills against the current teacher professional standards.
You can choose to specialise in Language and Literacy; Maths and Science; Art; or Humanities.
Study in groups and independently, and use online resources. Develop your independent working, time management, communication, collaborative, It and professional commitment skills.
Placements are an important part of this course. You'll spend several weeks of each year working in schools and educational settings to gain practical experience. We'll support you at every step, and help ensure you learn effectively.

This is a full-time intensive programme and you will attend classes on most weekdays. Sometimes the sessions will start at 08:30 and last until 17:30.
You'll be required to attend teaching placements on a full-time basis.
You can expect to be assessed through oral and poster presentations, portfolios and written assignments. This programme has no exams.

Work experience hones your skills and industry knowledge, making you a sought after graduate.
You'll gain work-based experience throughout the course. By the end of your first year, you'll have worked in a range of settings, including a six-week block placement.
Your second year will involve a seven or eight-week placement, and in your final year you'll work in an educational setting one day a week and undertake a 15-week school placement.
We work closely with our partner schools to develop your confidence and competence Some students are offered jobs on graduation by their placement schools.

You'll use modern, purpose-built facilities: high-quality teaching rooms, industry standard technology, and equipment that can be booked out and borrowed.

- Tariff points: 112
- GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C/4 or above in English Language, Mathematics and Science or equivalent.* Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
- A-level subjects: No specific subjects required. Points from A-Level General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) can be included towards overall tariff. You must have a minimum of two A-Levels.
- Relevant subjects: A post-16 qualification in a National Curriculum subject is advantageous.
- EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: No specific subjects required.
- Access: Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma; to include 15 level 3 credits at merit.
- Baccalaureate IB: No specific subjects required.
*If you do not meet the GCSE entry requirements, we will accept equivalency tests that are of a standard equivalent to GCSE grade C or above.
We recognise the individual nature of each application and our typical offer should be viewed as a guide. The Primary ITE programme includes a high level of placement-based learning and working with children. We would encourage all applicants to get relevant experience of working or volunteering with children to help prepare them for this crucial element of their programme.
As part of the selection process, applicants will be invited to an interview designed to assess professional suitability for a career in teaching.
On the interview day applicants will be given a literacy and numeracy task to identify any support needs in these areas prior to entry.
All offers will be subject to satisfactory health checks.
Disclosure of Criminal Background - Applicants who are offered a place must undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and will be required to complete a Disclosure Application Form. All information will be treated in confidence and only taken into account when absolutely necessary.
Department for Education Professional Skills Tests
All trainee teachers are required to pass skills tests in numeracy and literacy before they can be recommended for the award of qualified teacher status (QTS) and before starting their course. We recommend that you complete the skills tests in Numeracy and Literacy as soon as possible after you have submitted an application for an Initial Teacher Education programme. If practical, you should take these tests before any interview that you may be invited for, but if this is not possible, you should take them as soon as possible thereafter. If you have not passed the tests at the interview stage, any offer will be conditional until you have passed both tests. There will be a cut-off date of 2 August. If the tests have not been passed by this date, any place offered may be withdrawn and offered to someone else. Information about the tests can be found at The Department for Education.
Deferral requests will only be approved if they are received in writing by 2 August. Requests received after this date will not be granted and applicants will be required to withdraw and reapply the following year.
If you have not received your exam results, your offer from UWE Bristol will be conditional and will be subject to you achieving the tariff points/grades required for your course.
If you have already satisfied the academic entry requirements of your chosen course, you are likely to be made an unconditional offer. Please note that UWE Bristol will only make unconditional offers if you have already achieved your qualifications.
To make sure our applicants are academically prepared for when they start their studies at UWE Bristol, we do not make unconditional offers to those that are still studying their Level 3 qualifications (such as A-levels, BTEC, Access or equivalent). We hope that this will encourage our applicants to value their academic achievements as much as we do.
