We have a range of programmes covering a wide range of topics, including Finance, Strategy, Marketing, Leadership, Coaching and Mentoring, Innovation, and Design Thinking, among many others. Our programmes are delivered by experienced academics and practitioners, who combine cutting-edge research and thought leadership with a practical, real-world focus, to ensure our programmes meet professional and industry needs.
Several of the programmes in our Open Programme portfolio can also be taken as part of a full programme qualification. For example, successful completion of the optional assessment in 'Personal Mastery in Leadership', enables you to achieve 15 credits towards the attainment of a PG Certificate in Leadership and Management.
Personal Mastery in Leadership is a unique, reflective programme that explores the concepts of self-leadership and identity in the workplace. It is designed to help you develop greater self-awareness and knowledge around your personal identity, values, beliefs, aspirations and well-being, and how these factors contribute to your personal and professional effectiveness.
This programme further facilitates a critical understanding of impression management and the impact you may have on others with a view to helping you enhance your professional practice and your ability to lead yourself and others.
Who is it for?
Whether you are an aspiring, new or experienced leader of people, this programme will help you master the skills of self-leadership in order to put your best self forward and positively influence others.
It is also suitable for individuals who are looking for a change in direction or who are looking for ways to manage their own well-being and develop a supportive environment in times of uncertainty and change.
What do I get out of it?
This programme will help you to:
- Develop a greater sense of your own identity through self-knowledge;
- Enhance your personal and leadership effectiveness;
- Enhance your ability to positively influence others;
- Develop strategies to improve your personal resilience and well-being.
You also have the opportunity to complete the assessment and achieve 15 credits towards the attainment of a PG Certificate in Leadership and Management.
To obtain the full PG Certificate in Leadership and Management, you will also need to attend and complete the assessment for Leading Change Programme (15 credits) and the Strategic Leaders Programme (ILM Level 7) (30 credits). The latter also provides you with an ILM Level 7 qualification.
There are no formal entry requirements for this programme.

- Dress in the workplace
- Multiple identities at work
- Imposter syndrome
- Identity struggles
- How we identify and disidentify with our workplaces
- Derailing behaviours and thoughts
- Emotions in the workplace
Throughout the programme, you will have the opportunity to reflect on and explore these topics through individual activities, group work, case studies using innovative research and creative methods such as Lego Serious Play, and the use of mind maps.
Our open programmes are run at our dedicated Bristol Business Engagement Centre, providing a professional environment for your training needs. Located at Frenchay Campus, with easy access to the M4 and M5 motorways and Bristol Parkway rail station, it has four fully equipped training rooms, a communications and reception area.
To be able to fully participate in our course, you will need to be comfortable with using the Internet and searching for information online. Session materials are presented through a number of sources including Microsoft Word, Power Point, pdf and online workbooks and discussions.
As a leaner at the University of the West of England, you will also have full access to our library on campus and all online materials and resources.

The optional assessment carries a fee of an additional £100, which is payable in advance of the course or after day three once you have confirmed your registration for the assessment.
Fees include refreshments and lunch at all venues. Parking is only included at the Frenchay Campus location.
