This individually tailored programme has been created to address the growing need for supervision within the profession of coaching. Coaching has grown quickly as a developmental and supportive mechanism for professionals, managers, leaders and employees and is now commonly available within organisations provided either by external or internal coaches. Unlike other professions such as social work, counselling and psychotherapy, supervision has only recently been established as the corner stone of effective, ethical practice.
Supervision provides a safe place for coaches to: reflect on their performance and behaviour, to articulate their emotions fears and concerns, analyse coaching relationships, consider their own well being and health, be reminded of best ethical practice, learn and develop and gain support. We passionately believe that effective supervision benefits the coach, the client, the organisation in which both work and the coaching profession itself.
This programme examines the literature, research and best practice guidelines of coaching supervision alongside individual's experience, own philosophies and models, through practical application.

N.B. The ILM qualification is a gateway to accreditation but is not a license to practice.
There are no formal entry requirements but we recommend that normally you have successfully completed an undergraduate level 5 or post graduate level 7 qualification in coaching or had extensive experience in coaching.
You must also be able to complete a minimum of 30 hours of coaching supervision during the programme for the assessment.
What does it cover?
This is a flexible individually tailored programme with no set delivery start date, consisting of 10 hours tutor of delivery time, encompassing:-
- What is coaching supervision? examines the variety of definitions of coaching supervision in both the literature and organisations. It examines the complex nature of supervision and coaching supervision
- How do your values and beliefs impact on coaching supervision?examines people"s own beliefs and values and the impact they could have on coaching and coaching supervision practice
- Purpose and principles explores the academic literature, professional organisation"s literature and individual's own knowledge and thoughts on the purpose and principles of effective coaching supervision
- Stakeholders explores the stakeholders involved in coaching supervision, their expectations, needs and place
- Personal coaching supervision approach requires participants to individually research and critically evaluate a particular supervision approach that meets their own values, beliefs and context
- Critically evaluate three supervision models builds on the research above involving group work to analyse different models of supervision identifying similarities, differences, gaps, pros and cons and applicability to different contexts.
- Capabilities, competencies and skills analyses the skills, behaviours and capabilities required by effective, ethical supervisors
- Reflective practitioner explores the meaning of the term reflective practitioner and its importance within coaching and coaching supervision
- Coaching supervision contract examines the need for a contract within supervision
- Content of a contract explores what is needed to be included in this contract and why. It examines the expectations and needs of all stakeholders
- Supervision the practicalities examines individual's practice, identifying systems, procedures, legislation and best practice guidelines in order to develop own practice.

How will I learn?
This programme will be individually tailored to your context and learning needs within one to one tutorials, specially designed resources, guided reading, guided activities and introduction to supervision networks.
To achieve your ILM certificate, you will be required to complete a:
- Research Project on your understanding of the context in which effective coaching supervision exists and operates in an organisational context (4,000 - 5,000 words) - This will be due six months after the start of your programme.
- Prepare for and undertake 30 hours coaching supervision and reflect on your performance (3,000 - 4,000 words) - This will be due twelve months after the start of your programme.
- Critical Reflective Review requiring you to complete an in depth and evidenced reflection and assessment of yourself in relation to the requirements and challenges of the supervisor role (2,000 words) - This will be due twelve months after the start of your programme.
You will be given a set submission date to submit each ILM assignment as the start of the programme. If you are unsuccessful in passing your assessment on your first submission, you will have the opportunity to resubmit your assessment.
What commitment do I have to make?
We would recommend approximately 200 hours including taught sessions and personal study time to complete the module and assessment. This is only a guideline and will depend highly on the participants learning abilities.
Our Executive Education Programmes are run at our dedicated Bristol Business Engagement Centre, providing a professional environment for your development needs. Located at Frenchay Campus, with easy access to the M4 and M5 motorways and Bristol Parkway rail station, it has four fully equipped training rooms, a communications and reception area.
To be able to fully participate in our programme, you will need to be comfortable with using the Internet and searching for information online. Session materials are presented through a number of sources including Microsoft Word, Power Point, pdf and online workbooks and discussions.
As a leaner at the University of the West of England, you will also have full access to our library on campus and all online materials and resources. Alongside this once registered onto the ILM qualification you will be able to register for your ILM study membership and its range of benefits.

You will have access to the course Blackboard site and be contacted by your tutor on the programme start date to organise your first tutorial session. Your programme registration will be valid for 18 months for you to complete the assessments.
Tutorial sessions can take place at any agreed location with your tutor.
