The Faculty of Business and Law, UWE Bristol, is a registered training provider with the Institute of Leadership and Management. As part of our Executive Education portfolio we proudly offer an extended open programme in Coaching and Mentoring to allow you to achieve an ILM Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring qualification.
The ILM qualification aims to give you the skills and experience to develop your coaching/mentoring skills by practically completing coaching/mentoring sessions and critically reviewing these. Alongside this, you will also be encouraged to analyse your organisational environment, including its culture, structure and power and critically reflect on this in order to increase the effectiveness of your organisation.
Who is it for?
- Managers with significant responsibility for effective coaching and mentoring as part of their daily role within an organisational context
- aspirational or early career freelance coaches or mentors
- individuals aspiring to take up coaching or mentoring as part of their role*

This programme is aimed at anyone who undertakes coaching and/or mentoring in their workplace or who wishes to develop coaching and or mentoring within their organisation.
The Level 5 qualification is ideal for managers with significant responsibility for coaching and mentoring as part of their day-to-day role working with employees and colleagues. It is also designed to develop learners planning to move into a development role or start a career as a freelance coach or mentor offering coaching and mentoring to people within work settings. This is aimed at those who are offering or wish to offer coaching/mentoring at an operational level within organisations or as an external coach or mentor.
For those who are senior managers or HR/OD professionals and who want to develop their expertise and credibility in the fields of coaching and mentoring, or to establish coaching on an organisational level we also offer a Certificate in Executive Coaching and Mentoring (ILM Level 7).
If you are uncertain about the choice of level we are happy to discuss your personal situation in regards to which level qualification would be most appropriate for you.
There are no formal entry requirements but we recommend that normally you have successfully completed an undergraduate or post graduate qualification in Business, Management, Human Resource Management, Psychology or a related subject area, or an equivalent qualification.
Exceptional learners, who have no formal qualification in management or leadership, but who have several years' experience and have completed some formal training in the role, may also participate.
We strongly urge participants to consider the following before booking, which are requirements of the assessment:
- To have identified between 2 -3 individuals to coach/mentor at a suitable level for the qualification*. It is your responsibility to identify your coachees/mentees and plan your sessions within the required timeframe.
- Consider how you plan to complete 18 hours of coaching/mentoring within the assessment timeframe (the submission date will be approximately 12 months after the start of your programme) with your identified coachees/mentees.
- Ensure you are able to attend all delivery dates for the cohort.
*For this qualification you will be required to coach/mentor individuals who work in a professional capacity, where you will be able to provide coaching/mentoring in a workplace setting, i.e. not life coaching.
Careers / Further study
On successful completion of the programme, individuals can progress to our Certificate in Executive Coaching and Mentoring (ILM Level 7)
As a Higher Education Institution, we are also able to map your ILM qualification into one of our Professional Development Awards or other possible undergraduate and postgraduate awards for those wishing to develop their academic study further.
What does it cover?
Firmly rooted in academic ideas and research, the team of tutors (all practising coaches and mentors) will navigate participants through the ways in which coaching can use a range of interventions which support and embellish practice, theory and coach/coachee behaviours. The course will help the candidates move away from formulaic questions to an engagement of managers in complex ways of thinking. Practice will be a key part of class and include the use live examples of coaching, working in coaching triads and giving and receiving feedback. The cohorts and tutors will work together to learn and reflect upon well-researched approaches and will introduce the coaching techniques and the use of creative questions and ideas for making coaching and mentoring dynamic and will help participants move toward coaching and mentoring mastery.

What are coaching and mentoring? How are they perceived in organisations? What are my own perceptions? What skills, knowledge and capabilities are required? How do values and beliefs impact on coaching and mentoring? How can these activities be successfully structured? What is involved in contracting with individuals and organisations? How can I best learn and reflect on my development?
How can I develop my coaching/ mentoring practice? What is its purpose? What theories and models are informing my practice? How can I work authentically with my values, beliefs and expertise? How can I work ethically? What are my skills, knowledge and attitudes and how do these compare to professional standards? How do I need to develop as a professional?
How does coaching and mentoring fit within my organisation? What barriers to using coaching or mentoring in my organisation exist? How do we develop coaching and mentoring cultures? What is the impact of power, organisational and wider societal contexts on coaching/ mentoring?
Four individual days of peer learning sessions which will include a group supervision taster session, tutorial support and work with peers on your practice and the ILM assignments. These sessions will also include:
- Research Undertakings (a desire to review more academic focussed, practice-based research papers)
- Review and build your own coaching profile and practice
- Skills development (incl. diagnostic tools/techniques)
- Reflective exercises (using reflective journal as evidence for qualification)
- Personal Development Plans

Learning and Teaching
How will I learn?
The course is delivered though face-to-face group sessions and self study. As part of your study you will work closely with group members to engage and reflect on your learning to draw into your assessment. Class sessions are interactive allowing for the exchange of the wide variety of experiences people bring, coaching and mentoring exercises and discussions. Based on the ILM framework of Knowing-Doing-Being* we will encourage you to gather and evaluate knowledge, apply ideas, practice models and through reflection integrate your learning into your practice.
What commitment do I have to make?
Attend all delivery workshops
- Time commitment to complete 18 hours of coaching/mentoring for the ILM assessment by the allotted assessment date
- Identify a minimum of 2 and maximum of 3 coachees/mentees at an appropriate level to complete your coaching/mentoring hours
- The ILM assigns 160 hours to this qualification for the Total Qualification Time. This is estimated on the number of hours a learner will reasonably be likely to spend in preparation, study or any form of participation, including assessment. This is only a guideline, and will depend highly on your own personal learning ability and style.
- Complete your ILM assessments to strict deadlines.
- You will be required to use our electronic BlackBoard system to access course materials and information.
- We encourage participants to manage their own reading and are happy to supply a list of recommended texts on request.
On successful completion of your qualification you will be invited to join us at our ILM presentation ceremony to collect your ILM certificate and celebrate your achievement.
To achieve your ILM qualification, you will be required to complete 3 assignments:
- Assignment 1 focuses on your understanding of coaching and mentoring theory but linked to your own environment and practice.
- Assignment 2 requires you to evidence you have undertaken 18 hours of coaching and mentoring with between 2-3 individuals, including specific elements of coaching and mentoring like goal setting. You need to keep diaries, notes and logs of your practice to evidence your work.
- Assignment 3 is a reflective review on your coaching and mentoring including the impact of your own and your client's characteristics.
You will be given a set hand-in date to submit your ILM assignment.
This programme is accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management
Our Executive Education Programmes are run at our dedicated Bristol Business Engagement Centre, providing a professional environment for your development needs. Located at Frenchay Campus, with easy access to the M4 and M5 motorways and Bristol Parkway rail station, it has four fully equipped training rooms, a communications and reception area.
To be able to fully participate in our programme, you will need to be comfortable with using the Internet and searching for information online. Session materials are presented through a number of sources including Microsoft Word, Power Point, pdf and online workbooks and discussions.
As a leaner at the University of the West of England, you will also have full access to our library on campus and all online materials and resources. Alongside this once registered onto the ILM qualification you will be able to register for your ILM study membership and its range of benefits.
