Programme introduction

Our New Leaders Programme is an exciting interactive course blending theoretical knowledge with practical skills, designed to give those new to management or looking to obtain their first line management qualification the core skills needed to succeed in a role as an effective team manager. You will be given the space to work closely with your course peers and to explore real life examples of your management practice.

Structured over a four month period the programme offers you the opportunity to take away learning from the training sessions to apply in your workplace; in addition to the opportunity to reflect on and assess your impact as a manager.

On successful completion of the three assignments you will achieve an ILM Level 3 Award in Leadership and Management, giving you a widely recognised professional qualification, which will demonstrate your ability as a leader and manager and support you in your future career prospects.

Who is it for?

Our New Leaders Programme is suitable for you if you are new to management, in a supervisory, junior or first-line manager position and you wish to gain formal recognition of your skills and ability, whilst developing your management practice.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. However we recommend this course if you are currently working in a first line management role or you have some supervisory experience to be able to draw from your own experiences for the assessment.

Careers / Further study

On successful completion of the programme, individuals can progress to our Advanced Leaders Programme (ILM Level 5).

As a Higher Education Institution, we are also able to map your ILM qualification into one of our Professional Development Awards or other possible undergraduate and postgraduate awards for those wishing to develop their academic study further.

What does it cover?

This five day programme is designed to equip you with the tools and techniques to take up your first management role successfully. Focusing on developing your own skills, by looking at how you can review your own ability and identify potential development opportunities; motivating your team through leadership; and techniques to solve problems and inform decision making.

As part of the programme you will be required to complete three assessments to embed your learning and achieve the Level 3 Award in Leadership and Management from the Institute of Leadership and Management.

Programme Structure                                                                               

After each delivery day, you will be required to complete an assessment for submission by the set deadline.

Prior to your programme starting

Prior to your first delivery session you will be required to complete our online ILM Welcome session, explaining more about your qualification and the university via our online learning environment BlackBoard.

Each face-to-face session will have preparation work for you to complete ready for the session.

Day 1 - Getting to know us and each other, identifying learning needs.

The first day will see you meet the tutor and your peers and to develop an understanding of your own skills and abilities. This session will provide you with the opportunity to analyse your learning style and to conduct a personal swot analysis to identify your strengths and development areas. This session will also include an introduction to the library and to the support systems available to you whilst working with UWE Bristol towards your qualification. 

Topics covered in today's session will include:

  • The benefits of taking responsibility for your personal development
  • The value of learning and the importance of encouraging a commitment to learning
  • Understanding your organisation's objectives and purpose and how this relates to the development of individuals in the organisation
  • The importance of understanding and making use of individual learning styles when developing yourself and others
  • How to identify potential development opportunities
  • How to identify barriers to learning, and methods to overcome them
  • Available support mechanisms and how to make best use of them

By the end of the day you will be able to:

  • Analyse your preferred learning style and those of others in the group
  • Create a personal SWOT analysis
  • Set out development plans including timescales and resource implications
  • Know what resources are available to you at UWE Bristol and how to access them
  • Have identified learning objectives for the next four months

Post session:  

  • Complete part one of the "Developing yourself and others assignment"
  • Collect and analyse feedback from peers, management and staff

Day 2 - Developing yourself and others

This day will build on your learning from day one and focus on your role in supporting the development of others and how to update and review development plans. This session will also focus on linking your learning to assessment and how to work within an academic context. 

Topics covered in today's session will include:

  • Methods used to review and evaluate developmental  progress
  • Methods used to plan and monitor learning
  • Understanding assessment and the use of competency based criterion
  • Writing assessments

By the end of the day you will be able to:

  • Analyse development options
  • Create a development plan for yourself and another course member
  • Understand support needs that individuals may have and how to meet these
  • Identified review mechanisms to support your development
  • Practice writing up your learning in alignment with assessment criterion
  • Practice using Harvard referencing to support your use of theory

Post session:

  • Complete your "Developing yourself and others" submission.

Day 3 - Leading and motivating a team effectively

This day will look at how you take organisational strategy and vision and bring this into your team to understand the role they play. You will also explore and analyse what motivates people and what tools and techniques you can use to communicate and motivate your team to achieve their goals.

Topics covered in today's session will include:

  • Organisational purpose and the role it plays for first line management
  • Team purpose - relating individual and team objectives to organisational purpose
  • The role that effective communication plays in conveying the overall mission of the organisation
  • The importance of motivation in securing teams and individual commitment to objectives
  • Theories of motivation: motivational factors that are available to you as a leader; an appreciation of how these factors can apply to different situations, teams and individual; explore a range of effective techniques for communicating vision, goals and objectives.

By the end of the day you will:

  • Know how to select and use appropriate motivational interventions in different contexts 
  • Know how to give feedback on performance
  • Identify techniques for communicating vision, goals and objectives
  • Assess the effectiveness of your communication skills

Post session:

  • Complete your ILM assessment for the "leading and motivating a team effectively" assignment

Day 4 - Solving problems and making decisions 

This day will look at how to recognise, define, investigate and analyse problems you come across in the workplace and clearly present information and data from a variety of sources to inform decision-making.

Topics covered in today's session will include:

  • Objective setting in relation to problem solving
  • Different approaches to problem solving
  • Solving problems creatively
  • The differences between data and information
  • The importance of having adequate and relevant information for effective decision-making
  • Identifying what information is relevant to specific decisions

By the end of the day you will:

  • Have set SMART objectives for a problem of your choice
  • Used different problem solving techniques to solve a problem
  • Experimented with creative problem solving techniques
  • Use a range of decision making techniques to analyse potential solutions

Post session:

  • Complete a project using problem-solving techniques.

Day 5 Presenting solutions and reflecting on practice

Topics covered in today's session will include a review of your problem solving assignment and a presentation to the group.

  • Presenting a case effectively i.e. providing facts and evidence, not just opinion
  • Evaluating solutions and outcomes
  • Presenting your ideas to others
  • Monitoring and review techniques to evaluate progress
  • Reflecting on learning
  • Stakeholder analysis

By the end of the day you will:

  • Undertake a stakeholder analysis
  • Know how to structure and present a range of quantitative and qualitative data/information i.e. interpret charts and diagrams; calculate and use simple averages and basic summary statistics; methods of indexing and referencing
  • Present solutions effectively to a target audience
  • Use simple planning techniques e.g. action plans, Gantt charts etc. to monitor and evaluate progress
  • Use reflective tools to identify key learning points from the leadership programme
  • Update your skills and identify further training needs

Learning and Teaching

How will I learn?

Our open progarmmes are practical development days designed to give you an opportunity to look, analyse and discuss with our tutors and your peers the subject area and explore possible approaches and tools and techniques available to use.  Alongside each face-to-face session you will have will have access to online tools and materials, designed to support you further through your learning of the ILM unit.

Prior to your first face-to-face session you will be registered onto our online learning portal giving you access to our online welcome session regarding the ILM, which sets out the aims of your qualification and how we will support you in achieving this.

Study time

What commitment do I have to make?

You will be required to attend all face-to-face development days and structure your own personal learning time, to build on what you learn in the sessions. You will also be required to complete your ILM assessments to set submission dates.

On successful completion of your qualification you will be invited to join us at our ILM award presentation to collect your certificate and celebrate your achievement.

To achieve the ILM Level 3 Award in Leadership and Management as part of this course, you will be required to complete three assessments ranging between 1,000 2,000 words each on average, by the given submission dates.

Our Executive Education Programmes are run at our dedicated Bristol Business Engagement Centre, providing a professional environment for your development needs. Located at Frenchay Campus, with easy access to the M4 and M5 motorways and Bristol Parkway rail station, it has four fully equipped training rooms, a communications and reception area.

To be able to fully participate in our programme, you will need to be comfortable with using the Internet and searching for information online. Session materials are presented through a number of sources including Microsoft Word, Power Point, pdf and online workbooks and discussions.

As a leaner at the UWE Bristol, you will also have full access to our library on campus and all online materials and resources. Alongside this, you will be registered onto the ILM qualification and able to register for your ILM study membership and its range of benefits.
