This exciting new course being delivered by the Faculty of Business and Law at UWE Bristol looks to develop and embed action learning through facilitation.

Using individually-owned problems and issues from your learning set, you will develop core skills of listening, articulation, and questioning to analyse and develop strategies for managing these challenges. In addition you will look to develop other skills such as giving feedback, synthesising learning points and reflective abilities will be practised directly and indirectly through your safe peer action learning set discussions.

Who is it for?

This course is ideal for individuals in an organisational  development role; change and transformational initiatives, or from a service improvement role, looking to develop and enhance their skills in strengthening teams and individuals through facilitating action learning.

What will I get out of it?

Through active engagement in the sessions you will build your confidence in delivering learning through facilitation and learning through doing, so is a strong basis to develop yourself as the role of facilitator.



The course will run over a three month period where you will be expected to attend a mixture of taught and facilitated sessions with your learning group.

Prior to day one

You will be provided with a course text in advance to help embed your learning from the day and to refer to in your future work as a facilitator.

Day one (full day) Taught session - 9.30 - 16.30

The first day of the programme will look to set out the expectations of the course and review under pinning theory of action learning, including:

  • Types of facilitative approaches
  • Examples of models of research into action learning to be able to contribute to performance improvement
  • Concepts of power and authority and power dynamics
  • Cultural issues working with a diverse workforce
  • Personal beliefs and values and their source and effect on attitudes and behaviours
  • Communication theories, including verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Behaviours to encourage social interaction, openness, honesty, and trust and their significance in ALF
  • Look at managing yourself and time in order to build and maintain effective networks
  • Strategies and practices for building effective relationships
  • Strategies and techniques for improving the effectiveness of networks
  • Determining appropriate action learning styles and methods

Refreshments and a two-course lunch will be provided on this day.

Day's two and three (half days) Action Learning Sets - 09.30 12.30

These sessions will emulate the style of learning you are looking to achieve in your own action learning sets.

During this period you will be looking to set up your own action learning sets and bring your experiences, ideas and challenges with you to these sessions to discuss and work on as a group to review; analyse and determine possible courses of action to take your sets forward and develop a thorough understanding of the role as action learning facilitator.

Arrival tea/coffee and mid-morning refreshments will be provided on these days.

Learning and Teaching

How will I learn?

The structure of the course is designed to be highly experiential, seeking you to be an active member of the group, to help develop and shape the progression of the course and to engage in sharing and developing best practice through your own experiences of facilitating action learning groups.

To ensure this, cohort sizes will be between 6 - 10 participants.

Study time

What commitment do I have to make?

  • You will be asked to complete preparation work prior to your first session and between sessions to help aid your learning and the experience of the group
  • Full attendance at the three days is required to receive the ILM development award
  • You will be required to use our electronic BlackBoard system to access course materials and information. Training will be given on the system on day one of this course.


Professional accreditation

This course is accredited through the Institute of Leadership and Management and participants with full attendance will achieve an ILM Development Award in Facilitation Skills for Action Learning.

Our professional development courses are run at our dedicated Bristol Business Engagement Centre, providing a professional environment for your training needs. Located at Frenchay Campus, with easy access to the M4 and M5 motorways and Bristol Parkway rail station, it has four fully equipped training rooms, a communications and reception area. To be able to fully participate in our course, you will need to be comfortable with using the Internet and searching for information online. Session materials are presented through a number of sources including Microsoft Word, Power Point, pdf and online workbooks and discussions.

As a leaner at the University of the West of England, you will also have full access to our library on campus and all online materials and resources.

15% UWE Alumni Discount fee: £552 (available until the course start date)
