Introduction

At Bristol Business School, our portfolio of open programmes offers you and your business a flexible learning solution.  We have a range of programmes covering a wide range of topics, including Finance, Strategy, Marketing, Leadership, Coaching and Mentoring, Innovation, and Design Thinking, among many others.  Our programmes are delivered by experienced practitioners and academics, who combine cutting-edge thinking with a practical, real-world focus, ensuring our programmes meet professional and industry needs.

Programme introduction

In a commercial world of fast-changing sector boundaries, hyper-competition, rapid digitisation and global ambition it is ever more important that organisations have a robust competitive strategy in place. Unlike some other management areas strategy is practiced in many different forms, making it hard, sometimes, to know how to approach its formulation and execution.

During this one-day programme we will explore the fundamentals of strategy and how these are best addressed in current approaches.   As strategy is fundamentally aimed at describing and taking account of uncertain future outcomes we will look at ways in which organisations can reduce the subjectivity and risk associated with their strategic decision-making.

Who is it for?

This programme will suit those wishing to develop their knowledge of strategy-making and those who already have some responsibility in this area. In addition, it is widely accepted that many other employees are also better able to perform their roles equipped with an understanding of their company's strategy so exposure to its main principles and issues will be of great benefit to them.    This course is suitable for middle and senior line managers who are already in or making a transition into more strategic roles.

What do I get out of it?

By the end of the programme you will be able to understand:

  • the main tools associated with strategy formulation
  • processes used in mapping future sector scenarios and incorporating these into strategy
  • how organisations build and sustain competitive advantage
  • the pitfalls of strategy-making particularly with respect to its execution.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this open programme, although some familiarity with established management concepts is desirable.
