As a decision-maker in an organisation, you can use financial information to resolve problems and improve performance. This online, self-study course will provide you with the basic skills and understanding of how to interpret and analyse financial data, to do this.

This course can be studied as standalone learning or as accredited learning through successfully passing the exam.

Who is it for?

This programme is designed for managers who need a basic understanding of the principles of finance to support decision making and business understanding.    

What do I get out of it?

This programme will help you develop an understanding of:

  • Fundamental financial terminology and concepts
  • Reading and interpreting financial statements
  • Gauging the financial impact of operational decisions
  • The basis for evaluating investment decisions

This programme is ideal for anyone interested in, or required to use and analyse financial statements to aid decision-making.

Content

This e-learning programme is offered by UWE in collaboration with ILX Group, and has available accreditation by APMG International.

What does it cover?

The programme uses a series of 10 structured modules covering:

  1. Introduction to financial statements
  2. Profit and loss account
  3. Balance sheet
  4. Cash flow
  5. Costing decisions
  6.  Introduction to financial analysis
  7.  Investment appraisal
  8. Profit margin
  9. Asset turnover
  10. Return on Capital Employed (ROCE)

Each session has checkpoints built within it to allow you to check your understanding as you work through the materials, as well as an exam simulator.

Learning and Teaching

How will I learn?

This programme is delivered fully online and so you will require access to a computer with internet access.

Using voice-over, animation and regular learning-reinforcement techniques, the course delivers the classroom equivalent, in an easy to use and convenient format.

You will also require a calculator.

Mock exam simulator

Designed to test your understanding of the main programme objectives contained in the curriculum. You will be able to access this throughout your registration on the programme to complete sample exam questions, and test your knowledge and prepare for the exam. This function is available even if you have not paid to sit the exam.

Study time

This programme duration is 20 hours, split into 10 sessions. 

You will have access to the materials for 9 months to be able to plan your study time and book and sit your exam within this period.

Assessment

The exam is a multiple choice exam, consisting of:

  • 25 Questions
  • 60 minutes duration
  • Closed book (A copy of the glossary and a calculator are permitted in the exam).

The pass mark for the exam is 72% (18 marks out of 25). This programme is accredited by APMG International.

The e-learning course allows you to attempt simulated foundation exams, to gain feedback on areas that need further work. The programme also indicates when you are ready for the exam, based on performance in the simulated exam.

Sitting your exam

Once you have completed the online learning and believe you are ready to sit your exam, you will be able to book your exam at one of the registered training venues, or online, using your exam code. To request your exam code, please contact ExecEd@uwe.ac.uk.

We would recommend that you do not book your exam until you are able to achieve 80% or higher in the exam simulator to help secure your success. Once your exam voucher is issued, this will state the duration it is valid for. You must sit your exam within your course registration period and prior to your exam expiry date.
