Transport Infrastructure Engineering looks at the options and processes involved in designing transport infrastructure systems that are safe and sustainable.
This course develops the skills needed to design proposals whilst repecting physical, financial, environmental, social and time constraints and builds on your ability to present and critique solutions.

There are no formal entry requirements for participants wishing to undertake this course as a stand-alone CPD course without the optional module assessment.
If you wish to complete the course assessment you are expected to have a first degree at 2.2 level or above (or equivalent) or alternatively have industrial experience.
We strongly recommend that you speak to the course tutor prior to the course if you are unsure about your suitability to complete the assessment.

What does it cover?
- Needs appraisal - evaluation of primary and secondary information sources.
- Geometric design and route selection.
- Pavement design.
- Vehicle/infrastructure interaction.
- Materials design and optimisation.
- Construction and maintenance of infrastructure assets.
- Material sourcing and management.
- Infrastructure management.
- Communications and safety systems.
- Design standards and procedures.
- Economic, environmental and social issues.
What will the course outcome be?
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the design principles applying to transport infrastructure systems.
- Analyse client requirements and site conditions to identify safe and sustainable options for design and management.
- Evaluate transport project proposals against physical, financial, environmental, social and time constraints.
- Design, present and critique solutions to address a range of Infrastructure development needs, with consideration of good practice and appropriate design standards.
Learning and Teaching
You will be required to investigate and develop proposals for the design of a transport infrastructure project from a range of possible transport modes including: Air, road, cycle, rail and mass transit systems.
This will require a combination of individual and group-working, with opportunities for formative feedback on your proposals via tutor and peer-review.
This module will generally involve 6 hours direct contact time, every other week, for one semester.
Each 15 credit course (module) is expected to take 150 hours to complete.
- 36 hrs directed contact learning
- 36 hrs independent study
- 78 hrs assessment, including preparation
The assessment for this course includes an exam and design portfolio.

As this module carries university accreditation, please note that once you have submitted your booking form, you will be required to provide the following supporting information to the administration team for the module tutor to be able to review and formally accept your application as required by the university:
