Introduction

The Teaching and Training Fundamentals professional development programme is designed and delivered by experienced lecturers from UWE Bristol's School of Education and Childhood, and provides an opportunity to explore the foundational principles of Teaching, Training and Learning.

The introductory programme is aimed at anyone in a teaching or training role, be that in a commercial business, the public sector, or academia such as Higher or Further Education. You will have the opportunity to examine a variety of theoretical frameworks that underpin effective teaching and training and evaluate how to implement the approaches in your own practice. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to gain vital insights from experienced lecturers of the realities of the role as a teacher and trainer.

The module aims to provide you with the opportunity to:

  • explore the foundational principles of teaching, training and learning
  • apply the principles of teaching, training and learning to learning design
  • evaluate the effectiveness of your current practice, providing recommendations for optimisation.

To provide flexibility and meet the needs of individuals who wish to engage with the programme as well as organisations, we offer two alternative delivery modes:

Online blended delivery

  • Involves a combination of anytime accessible online sessions and activities, as well as live online support sessions via an online platform.
  • Ideal for individuals who wish to engage with the programme at a time convenient to their personal circumstances and commitments.
  • Includes independent tasks and activities that will facilitate the exploration of how to apply key concepts, approaches and frameworks to teaching and training practice.

Bespoke delivered programme

  • Involves formulating a bespoke package to deliver the programme to meet an organisations specific need, in their workplace.
  • Ideal for an organisation that wants several staff to engage with the programme and potentially apply the principles to specific aspects of their business.

Structure

Content

The course syllabus typically covers:

  • introduction to teaching and training
  • learning theories
  • learning, teaching and assessment design
  • effective learning environments
  • digital education approaches.

Learning and Teaching

For the online blended delivery approach, each of the anytime accessible online (asynchronous) study sessions will be a structured learning journey and will comprise of a variety of videos outlining the key concepts and principles, that will be supported by independent tasks and activities allowing you to understand, apply and reinforce your learning of the concepts covered.

Live online support study sessions (synchronous x 2 per programme run) will provide opportunities to discuss key concepts and principles with fellow participants and lecturers and reflect on how to implement them in your own practice.

For the bespoke delivered programme, a combination of asynchronous, synchronous online and in-person sessions will be delivered, as required by the organisation, in agreement with the programme leader.
