Structure

Content

The Postgraduate Certificate is made up of the four core modules detailed below:

Core modules:

  • Managing Finance - the aim of this module is to develop and build upon knowledge and understanding of the principles and techniques of information management and managing finance to support decision making in a global context.
  • Meeting Customer Needs - the aim of this module is to help students understand how organisations are transformed to better identify and satisfy the needs of their customers
  • People and Organisations - this module will provide students with a critical and enquiring understanding of the body of knowledge composing people and organisations introduce students to a range of theoretical perspectives and empirical research which accord with this body of knowledge develop their ability to deploy a variety of perspectives for analysing organisations and people
  • Strategic Analysis - the aim of this module is to introduce the terminology of economics and strategy, to develop your understanding of strategic analysis and practice.

The Postgraduate Diploma is made up of the four core modules above, plus four of the electives from a selection which will typically include:

  • Managing Change
  • Leadership
  • Project Management
  • Management as Intervention
  • Business Ethics and Critical Management
  • Innovation, Creativity & Enterprise
  • Sustainable Procurement

Masters

Dissertation

In addition to these modules, your dissertation gives you the chance to research an area of management of particular interest to you and of relevance to your career or company. Previous dissertation topics include:

  • The role of ward leadership in delivering the NHS plan (2000)
  • Working towards empowerment within a manufacturing team environment- a first person and reflective study
  • Is local e-government transformational?
  • Raising the standard: how does the change in school culture help to raise pupil education standards?

Teaching and learning

You'll learn through formal classes and seminar sessions, as well as through group work and independent study. The work will include assignments, exercises, case studies and presentations with an emphasis on independent learning to develop your problem-solving skills.

Attendance

We understand that postgraduate education is a major commitment, and it needs to fit in with your work, your family and the rest of your life. So as well as the full-time route we offer a choice of two part-time routes to our MSc Business Management - standard and fast-track - delivered on one evening a week over two twelve week terms each academic year (plus two three-day blocks for the fast-track - see below).

Taking the standard route, you should be able to complete the Diploma in 22 months and the full Master's programme in 33 months. Throughout the first and second year, you'll study two modules in each of the autumn and spring terms, and start your final dissertation in the autumn term of the third year.

The fast-track route is designed to let you complete the Diploma in only 16 months and the full Master's in just 24. Throughout the first year, you'll study two modules in each of the autumn and spring terms and an additional two in the summer term (in two three-day blocks) In the second year, you'll study two modules in the autumn term and start your dissertation in the spring term. Please note, the availability of the fast-track route is subject to demand.

Assessment

The course primarily uses continuous assessment, chiefly through marked assignments which are usually either organisation or role focused and of great practical benefit to you as an individual and to your organisation.

Entry

Entry requirements

You'll need:

  • A good honours degree (normally minimum 2.2) or equivalent business professional qualification

or

  • An HND in Business Studies or equivalent business professional award at NVQ 4, plus two years' relevant work experience

or

  • At least two years in a management role with in-house management education/development (part-time route only). You may be interviewed prior to acceptance.

If English is not your first language, you will be required to meet the UK Border Agency and Universities minimum English Language requirements, such as:

  • the International English Language Test (IELTS) 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all components
